Oh yes. It's been 36 years, and I still remember that feeling like a blow to the gut, the end. And I have read it countless times since (lost track after 28) and I still feel it. Beautifully done.

Whew! You almost captured the very feeling I had when I Finished LOTR. Your poem is very good.

What a lovely poem...you were able to capture the sadness that always accompanies the end of a wonderful tale so beautifully...

It truly is as though a part of you has died when that last page is turned. The reader has been lead on a great adventure with characters they have come to care about deeply...but then, after all is said and done...the final phrase is read, the final words said, and there is nothing more. And never again will the story be the same. There is something precious in that first reading...and you captured it so very perfectly. :)

Lovely poem. :)

Author Reply: Thank you! It was as if, when I turned the last page, I wished I could go back, could take it all back....I'm still unsure, after that heartrending moment, sobbing uncontrollably in my room, if taking it all back would have been the worst or best thing.
It's been over three years since I read it the first time and I've read the LotR about 5 times and after each read I just end up weeping because Merry and Pippin will never see Frodo again; and because he LEFT Sam. That is what gets me--the sundering of Frodo and Sam. Truly the most tragic parting of friends I've ever read.

oh, I can really recognise the feelings behind this. I was devastated the first time I read the book- I just couldn't believe it had finished like that.
Your poem says it all.
Well done
Helen

Author Reply: Thanks, it took me a long time to get it right, but I'm satisfied, and everyone else seems to like it too.

I'm not big on poetry, so to leave a compliment is a BIG deal for me.

This was really beautiful -- and it conveyed exactly how I felt when I finished reading for the first time.

I have never read anything that quite so strongly mirrored my own feelings on ending LotR - this is a beautiful poem, the words are just perfect.

But I can say to you, it's not the end! read the appendices, read the Silmarillion, read the Unfinished tales, read the History of Middle-earth. Then there is Tales from the Perilous Realm, Roverandom, and so forth (not quite Middle-earth, but not quite not.

"End? No, the journey doesn't end here..."

Author Reply: Thank you! I've read the Appendices, and the Silmarillion, and (ironically) started and never finished the Unfinished Tales. Yet, all I could think about those other books were, "Where are my hobbits? Where are my boys?" It just wasn't the same!

Strange - it's almost exactly the way I felt when I read the books for the first time 25 years ago. This is very beautiful. Thank you!

That was great. I think it was both a fulfilling yet depressing moment when I finished the books the first time myself. In my opinion, you kind of wonder why you even read them at all, because after you do you find yourself so captivated by them that all your thought is bent on them. Of course, you can always indulge in a second reading, but the longing for Middle Earth never goes away. The good professor wrote too well. :)

Author Reply: He did write too well...I've read the LotR four times and it never, never ceases to make my heart jump or me weep at the end. Simply the best adventure story I've ever read.

Author Reply: Whoops. I've read it five times. Kind of loose track after a while. Funny, whenever I see it on my shelf, it calls my name.
