Aw, this was lovely. :D And very cat-like. ;) Although I wish you had given the poor (purr) cat a name...

I wanted to leave a copy of my MEFA review for this on here as well.

What a cute story! I really like the thought of a dwarf coming to an elf to learn about Elvish writing. And you know how I love Elrohir...in anything. lol I could see him teaching a dwarf how to write. I imagine elves are very patient with teaching since they're immortal and have no need to hurry. Perhaps it would be less foreign to the dwarves for one of the twins to do it since they were Peredhil and traveled with the rangers. Tolkien never really explained how the dwarves, or perhaps only Gimli, that were at the Council fared in Rivendell in between the council and the departure of the fellowship. This may be your most unique pairing but it was a good one!

What a great idea! I definitely like this theory for how Ori learned to write Elvish script.

Well done, Jay!

Author Reply: Thanks! I think Ori had to learn it in Imladris - it was the only Elven realm friendly to dwarves, after all - so why not Elrohir?

The question about his father's name reminded me that I forgot to review here.

You're right - where would Ori have learned to write the elvish script, if not in Imladris? I like the idea that it was Elrohir who taught him.

Author Reply: I think he had to learn it in Imladris, so why not Elrohir? It's got nothing to do with the fact that he's my favourite elf ...

OH I just love this one! Great gap filler and explanation for something I'd wondered about myself!

Author Reply: Thank you - it's been something that niggled me for years!

What a wonderful manner in which Ori might have come to love to use the Tengwar writing! How marvelous a plotbunny to have attack you! Love it!

Author Reply: Thanks!

I was listening to my LOTR CD while driving home from work, when Gandalf began to read from the book of Mazarbul. I wondered yet again how Ori had learned the Elvish script - and the whole scene unfolded in moments :>)

Mum's the WordReviewed Chapter: 100 on 1/17/2008
This is wonderful, Jay! I can certainly believe that the Dwarves would appreciate all of the beauty of Elvish creations, even down to the lettering. You've created a perfect glimpse into this interaction -- and as always, leave us pining for more of the story. I can imagine Ori being frustrated with his own slowness and grateful for Elrohir's patience, while the Elves would be impressed with his dexterity despite the less-slender shape of his hands.

Well, that's the mark of a great writer: Leave 'em wanting more, and set their own imaginations racing!

Thanks for giving us this drabble, Jay!

Hugs and blessings,
Mum

Author Reply: Thank you! I'd have liked to include a scene with Elrohir first showing Ori how to write his own name with the Elvish letters, but there simply wasn't room in the word count - that's the problem with drabbles.

I'm glad you liked this, though!

Definitely an odd pairing; but one that works! One aspect of Rivendell's magic is, for me at least, it's being so open to different beings - Istari, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Men. Rivendell is defintely a place where one can learn as well as relax.

Author Reply: Rivendell was the Last Homely House - and Elrond didn't turn a hair when Gandalf turned up with a rag-tag band of Dwarves and a Hobbit. He's obviously used to visitors of all sorts, for all sorts of reasons.

What a clever and delightful gap-filler!

Author Reply: Thanks - it just niggled me, wondering how he had learned to write Elvish.

Oh good. East, west, home's best. I'm glad the shadows are lifting and they are beginning to see beyond revenge.
