Cousins and Other Nuisances  by Lindelea 8 Review(s)

It's so good to see Ferdi before the fire. I'd love to read more of what he and Merry used to get up to!

I wondered if you would have something about Pippin's birth, and of course you had. I really liked the scenes between the young ones. An owl, who would have thought? Nienor

Author Reply: So glad to hear from you!

Am home with a sick child, who will be wakening at any moment, I think, so this is the only review I have time to answer at the moment.

If you wanted more on Pippin's birth, it is to be found here:

The story also expands on a few chapters in "At the End of His Rope", interspersed between chapters on Pippin's early years.

And yes, the child is awake, so I'm out of here!

An adorable story with an ending that made me laugh. Its also a bittersweet tale with threads of sadness, not only for hints in this story, but because we know what happens to the characters. Young Ferdi is so different from his closed-in older version its shocking. Thank you for this glimpse into what the families were like before the tragedy.

Author Reply: You're welcome. I wrote this based on a family anecdote, where a sister, being asked if she wanted the new baby to be a boy or a girl, answered honestly, "I'd rather have a puppy than another brother!"

Poor Ferdi, but I hope that you see the close connexion between Ferdi-with-his-Nell and young Ferdi in this story. She is truly his other half, and completes the part of him that was taken away by tragedy eleven years later.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

It's a joy to see a happy Ferdi with his family before all the endless tragedy and suffering hit him.

Author Reply: O I know, and I feel terrible about all the angst. Perhaps I ought to wipe out his history and start over! (not that I could, for the Muse would remove to Hawaii permanently, I fear)

Anyhow, as far as I can tell from the timeline, after the current Gondor story he lives happily ever after with his Nell. (of stories in the works, the "Farry and Ferdi Go to Gondor" story is rather more comedy than angst, and the story where Ferdi and Pippin (nearly) burn down the Thain's stables is angsty, but set early on the timeline where you'd expect angst. Poor Ferdi...)

Oh darn! I hoped this was going to be a longer story. Maybe you hit that WIP button because subconsiously you know there's more to come. I can dream, can't I?

I have personally always had an angsty view of dear Pippin's birst, but I like to see stories that are sweet, too.

Hey, if nothing else, set this one aside and see if it grows into something larger. Maybe once Starfire and As the Gentle Rain are done.

Thanks.

Connie.

Author Reply: You never can tell. I wrote a second chapter to "Frogs" about six months after the first chapter, after all.

OTOH, another story is clamouring for attention (the "Paladin becomes Thain" story), and another part of "Shire" is beginning to stir.

Will just have to see where the Muse wants to go next.

Oh, my word! "Cousins are nuisance enough!" I love it! And the idea of telling young hobbits that the "old owl" brings them--priceless! I'll be chuckling all evening. Most stories about Pippin's birth are very angsty; it's nice to read one that is just--fun.

Author Reply: Have read several angsty versions of Pippin's birth. Have also read several stories where Merry holds Pippin withing minutes of his birth, or something to that effect. My poor Merry probably won't know about his new cousin until a bit later.

Hmmmm. Perhaps there is another chapter in the offing, where Merry awakens when he hears a baby crying in the wee hours and gets up to see...

Oh, what a great beginning. Con't wait to see where this is going. I'm curious to see what ideas you have about baby Pippin, as well as the others at this age. Oh yes, this could be great fun.

Connie.

Author Reply: Oops, sorry, I forgot to mark the "complete" box. I think this is complete. Of course, it has happened before that I have written a "one-shot" story and then another chapter popped up later. We can always hope.

Thanks for reviewing!
