Oh, I can't remember if I've reviewed this story before, but I don't care, I'm reviewing it again. (I've read it before, and I loved it then too, so if I haven't reviewed before now, I'm terribly sorry.) I love the moments you've written between the cousins. They feel so real. You've definitely caught how it is when you're with someone you're closest to: You can tell them your worst secrets, your deepest fears, and moments later be laughing yourselves silly over something that's gotta be incredibly inappropriate (given what's just happened and what's been said!) and yet...you just can't help yourselves. I love thinking that Merry and Pippin's relationship is just like the one you've written here. *grins* And every time I think about them trying to stop laughing and that cot squeaking, I start giggling to myself again. *snort!* *hee!* Author Reply: Oh, there's nothing to be sorry about:o) It's really, really flattering to get a review for a story that's been up and posted as long as this one has-early, late, I'll take 'em whenever I can get 'em, lol. Thanks, Storyfish. Yes, I've noticed stress (funerals, family crisis, medical emergencies,) seem to bring on hysterical giggle-fits, at least in my immediate family. Lucky for us the extended family is a forgiving bunch and they haven't disowned us yet. Love means never having to say you're sorry...for cackling like an lunatic;o)

If Tolkien could be here right now, he'd not only refrain from rapping your knuckles, he might even give you a "Well done." I certainly would. Love this story, especially the humor. It's delightful. Keep on writing. Julia

This is really lovely and a great companion piece to The Last Hour. I love your Merry and Pippin - they make me laugh and cry and cheer and sigh all at the same time. "Pippin smelled like home." - gorgeous. Author Reply: Thanks! I was really trying to reach for that tone of melancholy-mixed-with-joy that Tolkien does so well, and judging by your kind words, I guess I wasn't too far off the mark. Thanks again for taking the time to review:o)

[I had 'Lifewatch' and 'There and Back' on my mind when I was writing it, so much so that I was almost afraid to post it-thought I was poaching a bit too close to your preserves, if you know what I mean. (And if you do feel that way, just tell me, and I'll make some corrections.)] Not at all! When it comes right down to it, I'm poaching right inside Tolkien's preserve, just as close to the middle of it as I can get. I admit, I'd be a little put out if someone were to write a story and then claim they were the originator of something I'm fairly sure I thought up myself, such as Remembering Day with its little boat-candles. OTOH, if I saw Remembering Day in a story I wouldn't feel "poached" at all, honoured is more likely, that one of my ideas was worth expanding on. Perhaps other Tolkien purists worry about that sort of thing--"fanon" becoming "canon" where people promulgate something that was never in the original, but if it is true to the spirit of the original, at least as true as one can make it without being the original author, then it doesn't bother me. For example, Oselle's lilies of the valley bloom every May in my virtual Bag End garden... Guess what I'm trying to say is that you don't have to change a thing, and you're welcome to come and borrow a cup of sugar for your cookery any time. I'd probably ask other writers' permission to borrow things more often, if I could only remember where I read things. Like that elusive can of peaches in Samwise's pack, that I "borrowed" for my Muddlewort story... someone even wrote me to tell me what story that item originally appeared in, but my memory has once more misplaced that fact. Anyhow, here's another review that's not really a review. Sorry about that!

Man, I was going to review anyway, I really was, but after reading the end notes I was stunned nearly to silence by your kind accolades. And now I'm going to have to go back and re-read the story and cut and paste my favourite bits for you've driven them clear out of my head. Funny, I was thinking of "LifeWatch" while reading this. I really ought to get back to that poor languishing story and send Marigold my corrections to chapter 1 so she can go ahead with her beta-ing, if she hasn't given up for having waited so long... Thanks for the nudge. And I will try to get back and give you a proper review sometime this week. Remind me if I forget. I do like this story. Author Reply: I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it, and you so deserve the accolades. *Blushing* I'm not surprised you thought of your story while reading this one. I had 'Lifewatch' and 'There and Back' on my mind when I was writing it, so much so that I was almost afraid to post it-thought I was poaching a bit too close to your preserves, if you know what I mean. (And if you do feel that way, just tell me, and I'll make some corrections.) And 'Lifewatch' looks fine to me just the way it is, but I know the author's urge to endlessly tweak and tinker with words, and phrasing, and plot-the stories we write almost always fall a bit short of how we want them, don't they? I'm so glad you like it, and thank you for giving it a look!
