A Proper Little Lady  by Bodkin 8 Review(s)
anaReviewed Chapter: 2 on 3/9/2011
How sweet. Go Arwen!
I was amused by Elrond being so disconcerted she wanted to do something like that. I guess being raised by Maglor and Maedros didn't really make him and Elros dare play too many tricks as children, children have to be able to feel utterly safe and loved to dare do that, and as you said Elladan and Elrohir never had to bother to try, it was just a collateral result.
But it totally makes sense Arwen would want to, and I loved how you reminded us of her descent from the formidable Galadriel. And then comparing her to the Balrog, or a spider... that was hilarious. I can just see a gorgeous sweet little elven girl, beautiful like a dream. Hehe!

I have read very few stories centered wholly around Elves or Men or Dwarves, preferring Hobbits generally (though maybe one might not think it by the name, but that certainly isn't my fault-it was a nickname given by a friend of mine for reasons I'll never know or comprehend), but oh, Bodkin! This is just adorable! One of the things that stood out for me is that children will certainly be children, whatever their race, and would you believe I found myself thinking Arwen has a little something in common with Pippin? That perfectly provoking and sweetly simple way of charming herself out of trouble without even really meaning to. She's a dear little princess, and I really can't find fault with her for what she did. It *was* wrong, but who wants to be thought perfect?

Elladan and Elrohir are such wonderful, affectionate older brothers, and leave it to Glorfindel and Erestor to teach the perfect little princess the tricks of the trade-literally! LOL! I sure wouldn't like to have one of Elrond's lectures aimed at me. Goodness, poor child! And Celebrian would of course be kind and gentle even while not upholding what Arwen did.

And the end was just perfect! I enjoyed this immensely!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Thank you, Queen Galadriel! Elven childhoods were long - and Elven parents, I believe, rather calm and reasonable on the whole - so there must have been plenty of opportunities for - er - learning from experience! I could just see Arwen, a century or so younger than her brothers, becoming resentful at being considered such a sweet child. And showing solidarity through mischief is (to my mind) typical of the slightly bizarre way a child thinks. The only trouble being that she really is not naturally inclined to mischief, being too soft-hearted to want to upset people.

Elrond's displeasure could, I think, be rather scary - especially to one not accustomed to facing it. He would have been one to believer very firmly in noblesse oblige and expect his children to accept responsibility along with privilege. Elladan and Elrohir must have been somewhat disconcerted by Arwen's sudden descent into mischief - but they would have been very protective of her. I'm sure, too, that Glorfindel and Erestor would have been delighted to engage a willing participant into the games they play to entertain them over their long lives - and gently ensure that she knows the rules. Celebrian, I suspect, was a mischievous child herself (more so than Elrond) and knows when to turn a blind eye and when to reinforce a lesson.

I did enjoy writing this - it presented itself all in one go, neatly tied up with a bow, title and all! - and thank you for reminding me of it.

awww... very cute story. I likde Elrond a lot in this fic! Arwen is so cute as well.

Author Reply: Thank you. I like to imagine Elrond being totally bemused by his sweet little daughter's desire to show fellowship with her older brothers. And Arwen didn't actually enjoy being naughty - she was just doing it out of duty!

I have never seen young Arwen done like this and I absolutely love it!
It was sweet and lighthearted. You did well at keeping her acting like a little princess.
I loved seeing those bits of her grandmother and father in her.

'The look on her face as she smiled could only have been compared to the predatory gleam in the Balrog’s eyes when it was contemplating barbequing the golden-fair and extremely tasty-looking Lord Glorfindel.'
-Such an invigorating line.

This is certainly one of my favorite little elf stories.

Author Reply: Thank you!

Look at her ancestry - Arwen must have had 'formidable' written into every gene! And yet she was clearly kind-hearted and sweet with it.

I enjoyed playing with her.

Ah, Bodkin, now *this* is my little princess! Able to get in trouble and make everyone still love her in the end. Woohoo! I love it! Go Arwen!

Author Reply: Arwen so often seems a bit wishy-washy - but she must have force of character and bags of charm to do what she does. I suppose embroidering banners just doesn't do it for the 21st century audience!

Is this in response to Karri's challenge to write about a practical joke gone wrong, Bodkin? It's great! What a wonderful picture of Arwen, able to think of mischief but not wanting to do harm. She's neither the inconsiderate bully her father talked about nor the proper little lady. She's a clever, industrious, and delightful child!

Author Reply: No, not a response to a challenge. Just happened.

I can see Elrond being rather scary when in full fatherly flow - after all, he spent a long time nagging / haranguing / scolding the twins, but I don't think Arwen would have heard him too often. She just got a bit carried away.

(I found that I couldn't get her to make terms with her tutor too well. I don't think they are too fond of each other. Probably have to spend too much time together working on distasteful subjects.)

Oh lordy. She's following the example of her brothers (no point in thinking small) and thinking like her grandmother. Is she sure she's being cautious enough to survive childhood?

Author Reply: At least she is showing enough sense not to think of playing a trick on her grandfather!

What a cute story! How clever of Arwen to play pranks on all those people in one day. And how sweet that she feels so bad. Really enjoyed your characterization of a young Arwen. Well done.

Author Reply: Thank you. I cannot see Arwen as a perennially naughty child - so I can see her being rather overwhelmed by the results of her activities.
