I had not read this story before! You've packed so much great characterization into two hundred words - phrases like the brother who, little more than a great lad himself, must now stand as father to him add a whole world of family history to what would otherwise be a maudlin scene. Beregond's reminding Bergil of the boy's own military experience, duty and honor, is a brilliant touch.

My heart stopped at this line:
“Do not let him watch, Iorlas.” Wow.

They were expecting, I think, Denethor's justice, but found instead Aragorn's mercy. What a gift to the family, and one that they will be happy to spend their lives repaying.

My heart is in my throat, and it is difficult to draw breath. You have completely catapulted me into the moment.

Very well done.

(And now I must search through your stories, to see if you have expanded on Beregond's story, for surely he is my favourite among the Men of LOTR.)

That was nice (or horrible) to have from Beregond's POV. It's so easy to only remember that Aragorn showed great wisdom in pardoning him. I never thought much on the fact that he would have expected to die - and leave his son.

One little thing. It may be intentional, or just a word count issue, but I can't tell whether the captain is saying 'come' to Beregond or if Iorlas is saying it to Bergil (at the end).

I owe you a review for 'Dark Dreams', it was lovely.

Author Reply: To be honest I would quite possibly have never given any thought to Beregond or Beregil if Dwim hadn't requested them for her birthday. ;-) Then I had to find a way in - first I found the uncle, then I realised that Beregond had to have been expecting to die.

Part intenional, part word count and part sheer coincidence. The come was actaully flotsam and jetsam left from a discarded line and when I printed it out there it was! I decided I quite liked it and the ambiguity didn't worry me I decided. Besides - I don't have any words for a speech tag. ;-)

Thanks,

Avon
(And thanks for the Dark Dreams comment too.)
