Oh, this is so sad. I had hoped that at least part of his family had survived. How horrible for him to reach his goal only to realize there is nothing there to come back to.

He has to find some hobbits, I know. There has to be enough of them left to send a force north with the men and elves and to leave enough of a population to rebuild and begin again. This moment is still devestating, even knowing these facts.

Glad to see you working on this story again. Yes, it is obviously a difficult one to write, but it is a very good read.

Author Reply: I think this and the next chapter were two of the more difficult, and probably a big reason why I stalled on the writing. I have a secret desire to write all fluff and no angst, I suspect. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I've been following this whole fic and have really enjoyed it (especially the parallel storylines and dark early Shire history), so I was excited at the prospect of a new update!

The wildly swinging pendulum of uncertainty, though--poor Bucca doesn't know what to expect so he has to prepare himself for all outcomes! I hope he learns what happened for sure soon! *passes him tea and biscuits through the computer screen*

Excellent chapter and well-written!

Author Reply: Thanks! Didn't know you were along for the ride, but glad to have you aboard.

*Bucca nibbles absently at biscuits and sips at tea without noticing yet feels stronger for the sustenance*

What a wonderful treat to find a new chapter!

Poor Bucca. What a contrast between his hopefulness at the beginning and his despair at the end...

Author Reply: Definitely a roller coaster ride, to put it in unShirish terms.

A horrible homecoming for him, to believe his family is all gone now!

Alas for what has been lost! Poor Bucca!

Author Reply: Yes, alas, poor Bucca, I knew him well... (sorry, couldn't resist)
