A Merry Meeting at Bree  by maya_ar 6 Review(s)

I've been (re-)reading a few of your stories lately and greatly enjoying them, but could't quite put into words the reason for this. I now think I finally have *g*: You absolutely and wonderfully capture the voices and idiosynchrasies of behaviour of every single canon character, and also how they would interact with each other.

I think while I love "King's Justice" - it's a setting I'm particularly interested in as well, and you solved the inherent questions very well - this story here is my favourite: I loved the PoV of Nob and Barliman, and it was fun to see how the characters had developed in the intervening years, from Bergil as a competent adult to Sam Gamgee the "gentlehobbit".

What a delightful story! It was such great fun to see King Elessar return, and drink a plain mug of beer in the Prancing Pony. I enjoyed this thoroughly from end to end. Thank you, Maya_ar!

Here's another well-told tale my maya_ar. I loved the story-teller point of view and the accurate capture of the Pony's atmosphere. Good treatment of the charcters too. Regards - Chathol-linn

Author Reply: Thank you. This is another piece which was pure fun to write. It's always good to hear it rings true to another Tolkien-lover's ears.
cheers,

I have been missing out on good writing!! How??? *Nol huffs and stamps about* Umm. Anyway! I love this story because it's so beautifully canonical. I don't usually like canonical stories, because I am a blasphemer who finds them boring, but I think you've achieved the perfect voice - in character, full of quiet mischief even as it successfully conveys the grandeur of the Southern folk and their heritage, and the good hard heads and kind hearts of the Northern folk. Just perfect. I'm so very glad to have discovered your work! Great going, hope to see more.

Author Reply: Hi Nol,

Sorry I missed out on replying tot his review earlier: glad you liked it :-)

This was wonderful! The identity of the characters was hinted at and then revealed so wonderfully in their speech and clothes and general aspect. And the ending, about the king coming back to the north land, gave me chills.

Author Reply: Thank you for the kind words. It was a bit complex, managing the different character "voices", but it was especially fun doing Butterbur.

Very, very nice! I love stories where Aragorn and others visit our hobbits. The one bone I have always had to pick with JRRT was that *ban*! Very unnecessary, to my mind. It makes it so inconvenient. 8-)

Author Reply: Oh well. I suppose it means that we dabblers in Middle Earth history have to set our hobbit-man interactions in neutral zones like Bree, or back in the Kingdoms of the West. Which is not such a bad option, really.
