Nerdanel- This is a story I have admired for a long time. Gwindor is a darkly fascinating character in Narn Ni Chin Hurin, and I have oft felt he deserves more exploration than is given in any work. Your voice is always sharp and intelligent in your magnificent adaptions of Narn Ni Chin Hurin, and "The Darkness Will Never Pass Away" is certainly no exception. You have captured Gwindor's voice prefectly-worn, beaten and broken, desprately trying to recapture what once was and then falling, falling, hating himself and Turin for what has been done between him and Findulias. How desprately he wants to return to what he once was, before Morgoth tortured him to the brink of insanity in the mass factories of Angband. On that note, you anknowledge the violent drive of Gwindor's past without turning the story into a gore-fest. For this touch alone, "The Darkness Will Never Pass Away" is brilliant. The voice of the story itself is cynical yet poetic, a reminder of the proud, happy prince of Nargothrond he once was, how his view on life was twisted just as his body was, to the point he sees nothing without considering its darker ramifications. That he sees himself in Turin is obvious, and you capture his envy and self-hatered in a way that is believable yet does not push the reader to the point of disliking him. Without a doubt, however, this story is incredibly tragic, for even in death, Gwindor cannot escape what has been done to him. In the Halls Of Mandos, Morgoth's voice taunts him over and over again, reminding him softly, ever so softly, that "the darkness will never pass away". Thank you for telling Gwindor's story, Nerdanel. J.R.R. Tolkien would be proud. Sincerely, N.J. MacNamara | |
