gamgee, ar you sure you didn't get a little merry blood mised up in your family tree, as competitive as merry is you keep setting us up for him to have an issue, now he takes this and buildts an invite to camp, and then..... you know how far you've chased this sam merry competition. boy now if i can just get them all read.

Author Reply: This story was actually written for a friend after some of her stories got deleted off FFN for not being "stories". I've always considered it a little AU, but as I worked it into the Walking Trip story, I'm stuck with it. This was also written well before any Merry-Sam conflict was conceived. I just always saw Merry and Pippin as treating Sam like a servant pre-Quest, or at least pre-Conspiracy, perhaps from Pippin's treatment of him in FOTR as they are making their way to Buckland. I also try to veer away from fanon, which has all four of the Travelers best friends from the get go. I don't know why I've always seen Merry as competitive though. Maybe because he was the planner and thinker behind the Conspiracy, and his sheer stubbornness of not being left behind in Rohan.

I just found this story, and read it at the end of a long, busy day at work. It was just what the doctor ordered. What a great story. I liked Frodo making Merry and Pippin act out his story and the interplay between Frodo and SAm.
Thanks so much.

Author Reply: Hello kind stranger! Thanks so much for reading. I know what long, busy work days are like, so I'm glad this helped you unwind. :)

My goodness, Frodo is quite the martinet here! I'd hate to think what he'd do if he were let loose in the fanfiction world - probably force everyone to write long detailed analyses of his fics...

I liked the bit about the mathom he gave to Sam. A touching display of the caring on Frodo's part, and the dreaming and curiosity on Sam's.

Author Reply: LOL, yes Frodo was a bit strict here wasn't he? But it was all in good fun. I'm sure Merry and Pippin weren't quite so miserable as they made it appear. ;)

Frodo knew how much Sam loved that mathom and figured it was time to give it to him. Sam's a bit of a dreamer and much more curious than is normal for hobbits. I imagine the thought of flying on an eagle, while frightening, would also be quite mesmerizing to him.

Thanks so much for the review. I'm a big fan of your writing and it means a lot that you enjoyed it.

Very nice! I enjoyed the idea that when it came to a story, Frodo knew he could trust Sam to be honest with him; the description of Pippin's appetite was hilarious, as was the idea that Frodo had to *make* them act it out. You didn't say their ages in this one--I'm assuming post-Birthday Party and pre-Quest?

Author Reply: Yes, it's somewhere in that time frame, between 1410 - 1417 SR. I'm thinking it's probably closer to 1410 though.

Frodo knows Sam will always tell him the truth - and be gentle if he hadn't liked it. Pippin's appetite is infamous, even amongst hobbits. Plus, he's a tween and growing like a weed, and we all know how much growing boys can eat. Frodo knows exactly what to bribe his cousins with! There's nothing they wouldn't do for food.
