One Summer's Day  by Bodkin 4 Review(s)

Bodkin, this is such a beautiful gem I discovered through the MEFA's. This is a deeply moving story where every character has their own distinctive voice and personal growth in this short story. The pacing is graceful and your prose is gentle without pulling the punches, which hits the reader directly.

While I was wiping away my tears I could not help to wonder how Éowyn will react to Théodred's death later on. This piece surely gives me the reader an insight how cold and withdrawn she appeared to be during the Two Towers after Théodred died and she nearly looses Théoden as well, but with this precious gapfiller you give it so much depth. I do hope you will write these characters more (I just browsed through your story list and saw that you didn't), so maybe you will consider it.

Author Reply: Thank you! I am so glad you liked this. Theodred's death would have been a real loss of hope for Eowyn, wouldn't it? She would have been in despair and it would probably have led her straight to her desire to die in battle. Especially when combined with Grima and Theoden's decline. His recovery and final glorious moments are tied up with war, too. In fact, Faramir might well have had a real job on his hands to deal with her problems.

I don't often write Rohan / Gondor - but sometimes the stories just arrive and want to be written. Maybe there will be more about them - but I don't know!

This very touching, I'm glad I found it at MEFA

Author Reply: Thank you - I'm glad you like it. The first paragraph just emerged fully formed one day and I couldn't resist!

This is a nice look at young Eowyn and Eomer, and nice to see Theodred developed. One can definitely see the adult Eowyn we see in LotR in this little girl - and Theodred's approach is great. Eowyn was not a common child and needed medicine designed just for her.

Author Reply: Thank you. Eowyn must have felt a real need to kick back at life - and their loss of parents would have increased her closeness with Eomer. I feel Theoden was probably too busy to take on much of a substitute parenting role, and who better than a considerably older, rather splendid cousin.

I was thinking (after posting) on the influence of the senses and came to the conclusion that it was the sense of smell that got Theodred through to her, when the women and healers couldn't make an impression. Theodred smelled like a Rider and her father and made her feel safe. Thanks for giving the opportunity to say that!!

So you do Rohirrim well too, Bodkin! This was excellent. I think that Theodred is an underexplored minor character who has lots of possibilities. He is really good with Eomer and Eowyn here and they all come alive. I can see Eowyn's confusion and pain and Eomer's near despair.

Author Reply: This has been hanging around in my LOTR file for a while - well three months or so, cos that's how long I've been doing this. There aren't many happy families around in Tolkien, are there really! Eomer must have felt very responsible for his little sister - and I reckon admired his cousin enormously.

Thank you for your comment!
