Oh, what a great gift, and a very good idea that Bilbo poked Merry into becoming a writer. I also like that Merry learns some things about Sam, Though I don't know if the Gaffer really would force Sam to return a gift... All the best, Nienor

Oh, how utterly delightful! I read the part about Sam's hidden book a long time ago, but I didn't remember the fall into the old well, and Bilbo's gift was a perfectly beautiful surprise. jo Author Reply: Glad you liked it, Jo! Want to hear something funny? I got your comment in my email today and so came here to reply and there were several other comments I'd never seen!

Okay, hadn't seen this one before. Am so glad Sam was able to get help in time, and love the book given to Merry. Author Reply: Just now saw your comment (at least I think so) and so I'm replying a bit late. Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback!

Beautiful! I like the idea that it was Bilbo who inspired Merry to write his book of herblore though perhaps that is still some years off! That Merry was expecting a "jab" from Bilbo probably wan't amiss! I loved what it was though! Such a great idea! Author Reply: Thank you, Hai, for the comment! Sorry to be so late in replying. I don't know if this hit my mailbox when you made it or not, but I don't remember seeing it before.

Hi Lindelea, Yes, I suspect that Ted Sandyman was about Sam's age. Here are some quotes about Sandyman the Miller and Ted Sandyman: 'I've heard they went on the water after dinner in the moonlight,' said Old Noakes; 'and it was Drogo's weight as sunk the boat.' 'And _I_ heard she pushed him in, and he pulled her in after him,' said Sandyman, the Hobbiton miller. 'You shouldn't listen to all you hear, Sandyman,' said the Gaffer, who did not much like the miller.' ... The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 1, Ch 1, A Long-expected Party Sam Gamgee was sitting in one corner near the fire, and opposite him was Ted Sandyman, the miller's son; and there were various other rustic hobbits listening to their talk. The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 1, Ch 2, The Shadow of the Past 'Hi!' cried Sam in an outraged voice. 'There's that Ted Sandyman a-cutting down trees as he shouldn't. They didn't ought to be felled: it's that avenue beyond the Mill that shades the road to Bywater. I wish I could get at Ted, and I'd fell _him_!' The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 2, Ch 7, The Mirror of Galadriel 'Take Sandyman's mill now. Pimple [Lotho Sackville-Baggins] knocked it down almost as soon as he came to Bag End. Then he brought in a lot o' dirty-looking Men to build a bigger one and fill it full o' wheels and outlandish contraptions. Only that fool Ted was pleased by that, and he works there cleaning wheels for the Men, where his dad was the Miller and his own master.' The Return of the King, LoTR Book 6, Ch 8, The Scouring of the Shire Hope this helps! - Barbara Author Reply: Thank you, it does help! Funny, in all these years, and many re-readings, that somehow I never differentiated between Sandyman the Miller and Ted his son. Or maybe I did, at some time, but... In any event, that's clearer in my head now. Author Reply: I think it's all fixed now, both in this story and in "Aged to Perfection", which used to be chapter 4 and is now a story in its own right. Thanks again!

Good old Bilbo. I love that he knew Merry well enough to leave him that journal. I also liked that Merry expected a 'jab' but didn't get one :) I'm curious about chapter four. Is there a larger story wrapped around that? Another incidence of Merry falling in a well? I would love to see that. Author Reply: Yes, and it's here on SoA at: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=290 It is called "All's Well That Ends Well" and is set in Minas Tirith just after Beregond's "trial" or whatever it would be called. Thanks for asking!

woops, this IS the end after all. Too bad there isn't any more, as I would very much like to read more of this story... Author Reply: Well, I'm one to go on and on, and my editor is one who says "Quit while you're ahead." Sometimes I have my way and write oodles of chapters, and sometimes she has her way. Guess she'll be happy to read your comment. She's always saying, "Leave 'em wanting more."
