All I can say is, "Hear! Hear!" Brilliantly put.

hey there. i left a review of The Green Knight, also admitting i dont normally review the stories i read, mostly because i read all the time. also, i have read stories that were ok at best, and some that were really great stories. after i sent you TGK review, you promptly replied, and left me the names of other stories you had. i looked them up,and ive read those too. i still stand on MY belief that you are a very talented writer. each story ive read has been very good, and left no questions in my mind, nor a bad taste in my mouth. i fully understood.i agree too with you that Americans have totally, for the most part anyway, lost the meanings of "love" and "sex".i had no problems with any of your stories.if readers of your stories dont get it,or see it any different than you intended it,then for one they dont know Tolkien's writings too well, and for another thing....their minds are probably in the gutter. just my opinion, but i think you should keep up the good work, and keep writing as you feel.i for one find it hard to stop on one of your stories even to do things that i must. be assured when i'm done with my chores,i'm right back to the story. it would be great if everyone could know the meaning and the difference between love, and sex,and also word that as well as you have on this last page after this story.now....got any more stories i can read? have a great night, and thanks for the great stories.
Nessa :)

So, I'm not reading this fic, but I did read The Green Knight. I just found your notes interesting. I did very much see the resemblance of GK to Ivanhoe -- enough that I described it as such to a friend. I'd be interested in reading your other fics -- where can I find them?

All those who have commented on this "Apologia" before me have expressed what I feel so well that I don't really have much to add, except a hearty "hear, hear."

I never interpreted anything in this story at all as slashy; on the contrary, I too have read a good deal of medieval and Renaissance literature and I'm simply stunned at the way you capture the feel of it in these letters. Please write on, in your most distinctive style, and know that your readers are behind you all the way.

Le Rouret, I have been enjoying your story very much. Letting you know that was the whole point of writing. I'm not sure if I made that clear before, so I wanted to say it here. I also appreciate the tactfulness of your author's note.

As for some of the other responses to this... ouch!

I honestly don't think I have an especially filthy mind.

First, I've long since lost track of Bandy's age and maturity level, though it's probably been made quite clear at some point. However, I've simply formed the impression that he's young but not really a child anymore; the human equivalent of sixteen or so.

Second, while most fanfiction stories adressing homosexuality are romances, there are a handful that are more concerned with other aspects, such as social context. To me, it seemed possible that this story, described specifically as "NOT a happy story," might address the painful situation of having inappropriate desires, or painful repercussions of false rumors. I didn't think that this was going to be a Legolas/Bandy romance, nor did I think that Legolas would behave dishonorably.

I wrote about the above possibilities because it happened to be what I was thinking of on the night I had the time and energy to respond, not because I was especially in need of reassurance. I didn't intend what I said to be a distraction from the story.

Best wishes,
Carol

Author Reply: Carol,

Not to worry -- I'm not offended or upset in any way! Yours was not the "review" I was specifically answering anyway -- I get a good bit of direct email from some of my readers, and a few of those were a little shirty. Actually I appreciated your comments -- it's rare to get an erudite, well-written review that makes cogent points (though SoA reviewers are the best, I think -- you should read some of the reviews I get on AFF!) without tearing the author (namely, me) to shreds. But at any rate, I'm glad you AREN'T pushing a Legolas/Bandy romance -- some of my readers (my beta in particular) keep begging me to "slash it"! Needless to say, I refuse.

Rest assured this unhappy tale doesn't even mention homosexuality. I'm sure Tolkien knew it existed, but he sure never mentioned it, so neither will I!

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

I teach spanish medieval literature where it is not uncommon for ladies to hold hands, walk arm-in-arm or kiss on the cheeks or for men to declare their love and devotion (brotherly) for one another and especially their masters. It always amazes me that I must explain to the students in each instance that this is a perfectly natural expression of love between friends. So if you were getting grief for your story, I feel for you. It was clear to me and I am enjoying your story. It is very unique. I look forward to your updates. Put the ones who cannot follow you out of your mind.

I'm amazed you even had to write this, and consider it rather ridiculous that you had to. For what it's worth, I thought your meaning was perfectly clear. (Besides, Elf/Hobbit? Ew.)

Well said. I never thought that you intended to slash Legolas (much less with Bandobras - ick!) but the last letter was, erm, a bit strong on the affection, so I'm glad you've set things straight. While I don't mind slash so long as the story is well written, it must be exceptional quality to justify what Professor Tolkien would surely see as a depravation of his characters. And I think it is a pity that we modern readers (Americans mostly) tend to assume that love must be of the eros form, as you so eloquently put it. I think we lose a lot by that assumption, and close ourselves off from the pure love and friendship that Tolkien intended.

I'm reminded of the hypervigilant Puritan leader who, for fear of corruption, envisioned it in all things. Sorry you even had to write this note, LeRouret, over such a lovely, pure relationship.

Actually this Legolas/Bandy thing hadn't even crossed my mind. And you're right, professor Tolkien was a Christian and I don't really think he would ever make any of his characters gay.
I must admit I really don't like slash neither in LOTR fictions nor in Harry Potter's where they always slash Remus and Sirius. Can't two people just be friends anymore? It really annoyed me when people started making comments about Frodo and Sam during the movie. Where is the innocence in this world? Why does everything have to be sexual? I'm sorry but this is something that upsets me a little. :)
