My Dear Bandobras  by Le Rouret 7 Review(s)

Major tension! And I can see that it is driving everyone to distraction – not only Legolas, but your readers as well. This situation does tend to leave one on pins-and-needles…here we have our magnificent elven prince, who has had little time for contemplating the fairer sex, what with battling orcs, goblins, the hords of Sauron, and then attempting to establish a kingdom and get it to a point where it is thriving and a boon to it’s neighbors…and then being badgered, on top of all that, by parents and councilors alike to find a wife and wed. It really isn’t any wonder that he’s at last been “bedazzled” by a pretty face. I mean, considering what all he’s done, I think we can cut him a bit of slack and allow for some plain, ‘ole lust to overwhelm our fair elven prince. He has as much as admitted to Bandobras that he’s had virtually no time to really get to know this elven lass who’s caught his eye…and that’s where the true tension in all of this lies. We are all fairly certain that if he DID have the time to truly get to know this elf maid, he’d find her shallow, conceited, and definitely not to his liking….wouldn’t he??! Oh, Le Rouret, how you’ve gotten us all on the edge of our seats…will Legolas figure out that though fair of face and body, this elf maid simply is not “up to parr” with our noble elf prince – before his conniving councilors (and parents) have him leg-shackled to her?? And there’s the rub…will you stop this “doomed-from-the-start” union before it is solidified………..or will you allow it to be “consummated” and then tear it asunder later? For if you are to remain somewhat close to canon, it is Legolas and Gimli who later sail for Valinor…not Legolas, Gimli, and Legolas’s wife.

Personally, I’ve always felt a sign of a very good writer is one who so captures her readers – that they are so drawn in by the story – that their emotions are strongly brought into play by the actions of said story. Ah, you must be a very good writer indeed!!!
I’m looking forward to seeing how all this plays out.

Nynio, I feel a bit compelled to come to Le Rouret's defense in the matter of Legolas being out-of-character. In The Lord of the Rings he was little more than Aragorn's Sidekick #2, who popped up on the pages now and then with a couple of lines to remind the reader that he was still in existence. His character remained pretty neutral throughout the story. He was hardly developed aside from his friendship with Gimli and no history whatsoever is given for him other than that he was the son of the king of the Wood. His character was never truly developed, and so I think it's a tad unfair of you to classify Le Rouret's Legolas as out-of-character. If you feel that he has a strong and defined character, your perception of him has likely been altered by watching the movies or reading fanfiction in which Legolas is more developed. xx;

On to my usual line-or-two review: agh, this wrenches me. Brilliant prose as usual. I can only hope he'll come to his senses and realize he's betrothed to an airhead.
...And I'm not sure whether your comment back to me was a joke or not, and so I'll just say that no, I haven't read it. ^^

Author Reply: Thanks for defending me! I suppose I ought to have put a warning on the story description that this was not canon -- more "fanon" than anything else. Heck, "Green Knight" wasn't really canon either -- more Tolkien meets Ivanhoe. And I agree about Book!Legolas being a little bit of a non-character, but good heavens he was more interesting than Jackson's Movie!Legolas -- poor fellow had no personality whatsoever. I at least try to keep LeRouret!Legolas somewhat close in personality to Tolkien's, being deprecating and amusing and dangerous, which is really all you could glean of him through the books. And naturally our perceptions of a minor fictional character written in stilted prose will vary from reader to reader -- I'm just a little surprised at how much I've irritated people with this fic. I had no idea my perception of him varied so greatly from everyone else's! Well, at least I'm not slashing him.

It was your use of the phrase "bugger off" that made me think you'd read my other (extremely AU) fic "Pottymouth" -- Legolas says that quite a bit in that particular story. But I warned people it was AU, so no one really complained!

Again, thanks for the review. I appreciate your positive comments!

Oo you write so well, but your stories are another matter. The Legolas you portray is out of character. First he appears to be gay and now you picture him to be a shallow and hormone-driven adolescent. Whats worse??
But now I understand why you said it was a sad story. He marries her and then is going to be miserable for the rest of eternity when he tires of her in bed and discovers that she has more wind inside her futile head than the plains of Rohan.
Sad really. Sad also that a story so good as "The Green Knight", that you wrote earlier, will end up in a bad story such as this. You have more talent than that.

Author Reply: Well, I appreciate that our perceptions of Legolas' character vary, but good heavens -- I'm not quite so AU as to marry him off, when Tolkien only said he took GIMLI over the Sea with him. If you've read TGK you know I'm not above killing off an OC when the mood stikes me!

This is not canon, nor movie-verse. This is strictly my taking an extremely minor and underdeveloped tertiary character and playing around with him a bit. You think this is bad? Try reading my other fics! Nilmandra won't even publish them on Stories of Arda.

I'm glad you liked TGK; this isn't a "sequel" per se, just a sideline. I'll get to the true sequel ("King Eomer and the Green Knight") some time next year. And I promise, no airheads!

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Oh, now I know why this is billed as an "unhappy" story. Legolas! Snap out of it! The little tramp isn't worth it! I cannot believe that any fleeting treaty that might be made moot in a few hundred years when Legolas sails to Valinor is worth binding himself to this, this preening peacock of a brat girl for eternity. I bet she ends up dumping him, if he doesn't come to his senses and ditch her first. And she'll cause all sorts of disruption to the treaties, and the alliances, all for her pride and self-centered ego. Or worse, she'll go through with it, and poor Legolas will be wed forever (and even more out of our reach than he is now). Grrr.

Now now... Unfortunately, you ruined your story!!!! Idiot elf indeed!! He sees only the exterior. And I did think you considered him more substancial than this. To fall in love with the airhead queen...

Oh, no! No, no, no! Legolas has to put his foot down, I think. Gimli's right. "Idiot Elf" indeed.

Oh my goodness! They betrothed already? How silly of everyone to jump the gun like that and it's NOT fair to either Legolas or Laustaire. Sheesh! Thanks bunches for Legolas' point of view on that night. *g*

I'm really hoping that Bandy's mother will let him come BEFORE the wedding, just in case it needs to be stopped. Please please please let him get there ahead of time!? *begging*

Hasn't it been long enough? Come on! Never mind Pip's wedding to Diamond, Legolas actually NEEDS Bandy's presence ASAP!
