You give Frodo a very good narrating voice - and I love Pippin's interjections, even though we don't hear them.

All the best, Nienor

Really good job! It was so funny, but serious at the same time!

Author Reply: Pardon the delay in answering your review; somehow I didn't see it when it was originally posted.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a good word!

It's great to hear this from Frodo's POV, and so many years later. I'm sure that the war-weary Men listening were happy to hear about such carefree days, down-home 'country' caring and wisdom, and to learn more about their beloved periannath.

:)

Author Reply: I'd liked to have been in that listening crowd, wouldn't you?

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the plot bunny in the first place!

Oh! You made this a stand-alone story! I like how Frodo tells what happens. He does love his Merry dearly, and it`s fun to see how he makes comments for Pip to behave while telling what Merry can`t remember!

Author Reply: Thanks! Yes, I didn't want to just cut it, though the other story was improved and tightened up by the omission. Glad someone suggested putting it into a story of its own. You're right; I love showing the affection between the cousins, and how it grew into a fierce "thick-and-thin" loyalty.

Thanks!

Here's Frodo's story all in its proper context. Do you know, on the first reading I never thought to connect it to "Alls Well That Ends Well," though I see other readers were much more perceptive than I was. I like the addition at the beginning that makes it so clear for those of us who have now read so many fanfiction stories that they can't remember any more who is connected to what, even when it's by their favourite author! This chapter is labeled prologue - is there more?

I also wonder about wells in Minas Tirith. Wells usually have to go down pretty far to find water, and Minas Tirith is a darn tall city as well. If the well was on one of the lower levels, I suppose I can imagine Merry surviving a fall down into it, as plastered as he was. In the upper levels, though, I wonder if wells are even practical? I guess I'm invisioning some kind of cistern to provide water pressure for the aristocrats - or something. My head starts to hurt when I try to make the engineering work out of things like this that I don't think were ever meant to be thought about. Regardless, both (all three?) stories are wonderful fun.

Author Reply: Well, in "All's Well" the hobbits were just about as far from the banqueting hall as possible, and heading in the wrong direction, so they were likely on one of the lowest levels when Merry fell into the well. At least, I think that's how it happened. Good insights as to water supply in MT; you know, I never really gave it much consideration. Thanks for the food for thought!

Like it. Nice 'told in the pub' style story and the asides are really enjoyable. Works well like this.

Author Reply: Thanks! I think you can take some credit for the saving of this story. My editor had talked me into cutting it and it was going to go in the "dead file" with the rest of the background, though I hated to do it. Thanks to you and my editor and a little extra work on the part of the Muse, we were able to find a home for the piece.

You, and your editor, were right. This makes a nice little stand-alone story.

Author Reply: Thanks! It just needed a little propping to stand upright. And my editor was right; the other story worked better when I worked harder. (And she's too nice to say "I told you so", so I'll just rub my own nose in it this once more and save her the trouble!)
