AWWWw!!! Beautiful story! I loved it! Very touching and it is nice to see the elf get really mad once in a while! But I understand why everyone would think what they did...*hugs elf* Thanks for such a great story! Now I have to read The Golden Bell of Greenleaf! NiRi Author Reply: Hey NiRi! :-) My very first story (which, by the way, I posted online with the Mellon Chronicles group, and later at that site...before school computers banished me to exile from the group until this summer LOL). I went back and reread it after I got the notice you had reviewed and found it needs desperate weeding from the dread 'comma' infestation! ;-) But I'm glad you liked it - I had fun writing it and it almost killed me to let it go - kind of like letting a child go off to school for the first time! I was so scared other kids might be mean to it! LOL Anyway, this story started my preoccupation with the sea-longing (my preoccupation with Legolas was already an established fact *g*) and the golden mare Legolas and Gimli ride to Minas Tirith on is, of course, Legolas' 'golden bell'! I certainly appreciate you taking the time and effort to read and review, NiRi! Thank you again! Linda

I really enjoyed reading this. I liked seeing a Legolas who had emotion after seeing the movies with him being so ... placid. Especially for a son of Thranduil! “I am afraid to ask him.” How that mirrors what so many of us do -- sit and worry about what 'might' be instead of confronting 'what is'. I love the idea of the mare and Legolas speaking ... You captured the strong emotions in both Aragorn and Legolas and made us feel their anger and disappointment. Well done! Author Reply: How in the world did you find this story, Leaward? It was actually fun reading a review on something I had posted a while back - I even went back and reread it and found concrete evidence I have been a "comma freak" since the beginning! LOL I'll have to fix that.... Thank you so much for taking the time to review - this was my very first effort and I love hearing it is still enjoyable! Legolas in the movies is so underplayed it makes me want to yell sometimes. He has a few emotional reactions, but not nearly enough (darn it!) Anyway, I'm with you...a son of Thranduil would not react placidly to his best friend thinking him capable of leaving like that! Anyway, I'm glad the emotions came through. Yes, sometimes we seem to think it's easier to imagine rather than confront the reality of what's bothering us. I'm glad you liked the Legolas/mare moment. I am hung up on Legolas and his horses right now. :-) Thanks again for reviewing - it's always so encouraging! linda

Great story, but I noticed a mistake you made in regards to Legolas’s horse, Alfirin. You said that Alfirin was at first a gelding and then you referred to him as a mare. Um, dear, do you know that a gelding is a male horse that has been castrated? Other than that this is a wonderful story of the friendship of Aragorn and Legolas! Author Reply: Hello SAMII! I checked back in the story and you are referring to the part where Gimli is complaining to Faramir about riding Legolas' new horse. He says, "I miss Arod" and continues thinking about the retired steel-white gelding in Legolas' stables. Then right after that, Legolas rides up on the fiery, golden mare named Alfirin. (Arod is the gelding, and Alfirin is the mare.) Is that what you were talking about, or is there another place where it still isn't clear? Thanks for pointing that out. I'm very glad the friendship between Aragorn and Legolas came through - I've always thought in my mind that they were almost like brothers. Thank you for the review! :-) linda

Hi! This is a beautiful story and nicely done! I loved the way Legolas temper flared and he indulged in his fit. Angry Legolas, wow. He really has the temper of Thranduil. Well, sometimes! I also love the exchange of Aragorn and Legolas, and the underhanded point taken at the end, reminder of Aragorns refusal to leave at Parth Galen. you really describe their friendship well and greatly! This is a very good story! Thank you! Aislynn Author Reply: Hi, Aislynn! Thank you for such a kind review! Legolas always seemed so mannerly, and polite, and well, kind of quiet in the books...but to have an Adar like the Elvenking...hmmmm, you know what they say about still waters running deep. I figured with the right provocation he could definitely throw a fit! LOL That part in the movie about Parth Galen never fails to make me yell at Aragorn "Hey, he's an elf...better hearing...better eyesight...grew up around Shadow so more sensitive to it...why don't you listen to him!?" I just had to throw that in there so Legolas could remind his buddy in a roundabout kind of way!:-) I'm so glad you enjoyed the story! Thanks!

Nicely written and a very thoughtful look at the relationship of these characters. Author Reply: I have always thought Aragorn had to have been very concerned about the elf and the call of the sea...and if they were the close friends I imagine them to be, it had to have been hard for him to watch and know that he was the reason his friend stayed and suffered. Thank you, Karri, for the kind review!

My dear heart, this story was just wonderful! I am so jealous of the way you were able to get into everyone's head and keep all the characters firmly in character. Wonderful dialogue and interaction. I take my hat off to you. Well done, very well done - more, soon, please. Rose Author Reply: RS! Now I will post just to keep YOU reviewing! LOL Thank you, but don't be jealous...just write another story!!!! hinthinthint....As for more, well, there is this horse who had an elf, ya see, and he won't leave me alone about it! If I can ever get up the nerve, I'll post that one (it goes with this one...happens four years before)...will consider it, and thank you again for the kind review!

Legolas really is his father's son in this, isn't he? I loved that. It must have torn his heart out to see his father leave. His love for Aragorn must have been strong. I also liked the little glimpses we get of Eldarion. Author Reply: You know, I started out in the world of LOTR totally ignorant, and did a lot of studying Tolkien to learn about the elves especially. When I discovered fan fiction, I had a hard time with those views of a mean, demon Thranduil. The pictures of Thranduil I see in your stories, daw, and a few other authors as well, have been so welcome because I could only see him as a strong ruler who cared for his people, and wouldn't that carry over to his family as well? If you could see Thranduil in Legolas in this story, and get some sense of the son's pain, then things worked out better than I hoped. Thank you for those encouraging words! (Eldarion is something else, isn't he?)

Nicely done! I've read a lot of stories in which Legolas dealt with Aragorn's imminent leaving/death, but I liked the fact that it was the other way around this time, and rumour beside... The characterization of that friendship was perfect - especially the arguments (banter?). Glad our favorite elf will have his friends beside him and I can just picture the upcoming "conversation" with Gimli and Faramir. Author Reply: It was so interesting how that song "My Immortal" perfectly described (at least to my mind) how Aragorn might feel if he were faced with the loss of his friend. Of course, we know Legolas did not leave until much later, but if these two were so close, then Aragorn had to be concerned about the effects of the sea-longing on the elf. In the story, the rumors just confirmed his worst fears, and he reacted without thought. The banter (arguments) seemed natural between two who have shared a lot, and they're so different from each other anyway (LOL...one scruffy, one immaculate, for instance). I'm glad you liked the story, songspinner, and yes, Gimli and Faramir have some serious apologizing to do later! ;-) Thank you for the kind review!

That was really wonderful! You had me smiling, laughing, giggling and deeply touched in turns. It is amazing how well you developed the characters in such a short piece. Please do write some more. There are so many possibilities that you can develop from this piece. Once again, thank you for such an entertaining piece on this rather quiet day! Author Reply: Thank you, Manderly. If the story did all that I am more than pleased. As for the infinite possibilities, I already have another one ready, set four years before Through All of These Years takes place. I'm just trying to work up the courage to let it go! :-/ Thank you for your very kind words - they are a needed encouragement. (Glad I helped liven up your day...getting these reviews has livened up mine! :-) )

I love the Aragorn/Legolas relationship. And Gimli. And the horse - a very eloquent horse, too. It would be terribly hard for Legolas to remain after his father had left - I'm glad Aragorn and Arwen went with him to support him. Rumour is like Chinese Whispers. It starts off at nothing much and spirals out of control in a matter of hours and it is so much easier to believe something that you dread happening anyway. A sort of internal preparation for misery. It is a good thing that they talked it over. Nice characterisation. Author Reply: I am rather partial to those two myself, with a healthy dose of dwarf to keep them on their toes! As for the horse...well, I seem to be hung up on eloquent horses lately...I have always thought since Legolas could talk to the trees and understand them, then "the elvish way with all good beasts" that Tolkien mentions in the The Two Towers (when Eomer gives Arod to Legolas) had to mean the dear elf could communicate quite nicely with horses, too. Rumors and gossip - they take on lives of their own after awhile...and I really liked what you said about believing that which you dread happening the most. Aragorn certainly did, and he was certainly miserable! Thank you so much for the kind review, Bodkin.
