Knitting Socks  by Lindelea 5 Review(s)

very fine start, now are you ready to finish the post?

Author Reply: Thank you, Nancylea, I hope I get the chance to finish. The pace of life seems to be growing a little saner, recently. I am going to have to buy a new keyboard, first, as during the holiday festivities someone spilled something sticky, making typing rather a slow and painful process.

Way to go Pip!! I'm sure he surprised many Hobbits with this display of maturity. Too bad his father didn't see this. I hate abuse to people or animals.

This is a wonderful start. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Author Reply: Thank you, Tari. I'm sorry I got sidetracked by RL and haven't posted in so long. I appreciate the encouraging words.

Excellent acquisition of a new mount! Alas for Blaze, but colic does happen, unfortunately! Now--to get this pony calmed and happy with his new situation.

And Paladin was undoubtedly a happier person as a farmer in Whitwell than as the Thain.

Author Reply: I think I'd be happier as a farmer than the head of a large family, all living together in one big place, as well. I love how decisive Pippin is here. Impulsive, yes, as he was portrayed in the original LOTR, but it turns out for the most part to be one of his strengths.

Thanks!

Ooo, this is just wonderful! And I mean that twice, or maybe three times.

The first thing I mean is that this story is edited and ready to post again. You've been working on it for a very long time, and I'm looking forward to the gift of all that thought. I'm sure we're going to get a tighter, more mature story as a result of all your growth as a writer over the years, and all the creative work of crafting your entire story universe. The second thing I mean, yippee that you seem to have the slightest bit extra of time these days, and anticipating new chapters, new stories will be so much fun.

The third thing I mean is that this chapter is wonderful. The dynamic with Pippin's father is such a fascinating thing. As harsh as he is, Pippin wants to be just like him. And the funny thing is, in the end he is much like Paladin. The same in his unwavering commitment to duty, no matter how personally difficult. The same in his love for his family, which Pippin remembers from earlier, less difficult days. Wouldn't it be such a perfect world if we could all take only the best from our upbringing to pass on to our own children? It's also a treat to see this chapter, set before the quest, while Frodo and the conspirators are still worried and Pippin especially is unsure how to handle what is coming. I remember the chapter from "A Healer's Tale" where he tries to puzzle out his conflicting duties with Woodruff. He is still very young here, the sometimes thoughtless-appearing tween who has a heart bigger than the whole world. Merry too, already part pony and the confident older cousin, on the verge of his biggest adventure. Just lovely. Are there more prequel chapters to follow, getting to know Socks, or are we going to jump quickly to where the original story started?

Author Reply: I'm sorry, things got very busy after I posted this and there wasn't much time online as a result. I hope to get back to SoA in future more than I did this year... but there's no telling.

Anyhow, thank you for your lovely character analysis. You hit the high points right on the head, and help to clarify the characters in my own mind (what there is left of it, anyhow).

At this point, I don't even remember what's in the story file. I need to go back and look (and hope that our computer crash, at the end of last summer, didn't wipe out anything crucial -- haven't had time before now to check those fanfic files to see how well they survived).

It is great to read this again Lindelea. And a belated happy birthday too.

Author Reply: Thank you! (Very belatedly on my part. I have spent almost no time at SoA over the past year, and it shows...)
