Oh my, this is beautiful. I must confess that I rarely read stories that do not feature hobbits in some way, and I usually avoid Denethor as a fic subject! But you have skillfully woven a gentler (yet not uncharacteristic) Denethor in with the story of the mantle and a glimpse of Finduilas as she may have been. Thank you for this insightful story. I have long loved that scene when Faramir brings the mantle to Eowyn high up on the walls of Minas Tirith. Again, thank you.

Oooh, lovely story. One of the best evocations of the relationship between Finduilas and Denethor I've ever read. One can see how much more forgiving and gentle Denethor is with her; and realize how the light dimmed for him after she died and how he might have darkened and twisted in its absence. I loved Finduilas' foresight about Faramir, how he will be more like his father in spirit than Boromir, yet be a peacemaker and bringer of light as well as a warrior.
