Change in the Weather  by Lindelea 8 Review(s)

This was beautiful, especially the last chapter, even though it contains by far too many dead hobbits.

I love how Pippin convinces Merry to go to Gondor... it is nice to see how their relationship changes through the three chapters, and Pippin becomes more and more the leader of the two.

Greetings, Nienor

Author Reply: Belated greetings, Nienor. I saw this just now, while checking something. Many thanks for your thoughtfulness in leaving a review for each story you read.

Ever onward.

That is so poignant for some reason. *wipes eyes* Oh, this really got me crying: Estella's death, the seremony in Tookland, the end... I say, you and Larner just have an amazing nack for making simple things so poignant as to be heartbreaking, and saying so much in few words.
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Ah yes, it even brings tears to my eyes, and that doesn't often happen, considering I know ahead all that is to happen.

Thanks so much for brightening my day with your comments.

Author Reply: Goodness I sounded so omniscient just now, but I really meant "since I know all that is to happen in the story I'm writing". They're always outlined ahead of time, as you may know. I couldn't write without knowing the outcome; it's too easy to hit a brick wall or lose myself amongst the plot threads...

Oh, this was wonderful! We see Pippin's POV in the book, but how nice to see Merry's! And you do it so well!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Thanks! I must have scoured the chapter for every bit of nuance before I dared add my own imaginings.

One of the things that makes LOTR so much fun to play with is all the loose ends. But it also makes it sad, because nothing stops at the 'happy ever after'. Instead there is always the 'what if'.

I hate picturing Merry and Pippin leaving their families and all their dead kin and going off to Rohan and Gondor to await their own deaths. And of course, that's not the end either, because there are no ends.

Beautiful story. Need to go and find a tissue.

Oh, this one's even better than the first. Beautiful melding of canon and imagination! Wow! Bows and praises to you!

Dear Pip and Merry -- Pip is growing up so fast at this point, isn't he?

This line seems like the very essence of tweenish Pippinhood:

‘Who needs arms and legs?’ Pippin said whimsically. ‘Look at all we’ve accomplished just lying here!’

I can't wait for the third chapter. Happy typing!

Author Reply: Thanks! I often wondered what this chapter would look like from Merry's perspective. He was my favourite hobbit, from the first time I read the book, and it seemed I always wanted to see a bit more of him.

(I suppose Legolas fans feel the same about their favourite character.)

I do enjoy imagining a whimsical Pippin, even when he's past his tweens.

Oh, this is lovely. So canon, so Tolkien. I just loved it. A wonderfully wrought adventure of our dear hobbits. I especially liked how you forshadowed a bit of the quest in these lines:

"Frodo wasn’t always sensible, though. Sometimes he was more heroic than was good for him."

‘What’s to be frightened of?’ Pip demanded bravely. His Merry was worried, he could see, and needed bolstering. That’s what cousins were for, to bolster one another, after all.

And then this line could have been written by Tolkien himself for Pippin to say:

" ‘I hear you just fine,’ Pippin echoed. ‘A bit too fine, if you ask me.'"

Thanks for posting this! It really brightened my day!

Oh, very nice! Beautiful Merry and Pippin, as always, and just so very hobbity! Looking forward eagerly to the next two in the series.
