That is lovely and very touching too. I do think Gandalf would grieve them that way. Even though you could understand an immortal steeling themselves against becoming too fond of beings whose lives were beautiful, but fleeting, like the bright flicker of the sun on a dragonfly wing, I get the feeling hobbits, and these in particular, made their way into his heart long ago.

Oh I believe Gandalf did mourn Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam when they all passed Beyond the Circles of the World, for we know Gandalf loved the hobbit folk greatly, and as you said I know that these three were especially dear to his heart...
