must not cry, must not cry...*tears streaming down face* Gotta love these hobbit stories. You don't get to read many when our hobbits are old, but it's nice to know that they still cared so strongly for each other after all those years and adventures. Great little story!

I've been a naughty lass and not read as much at the challenge site as I should have.

This is a wonderful tale. Gentle, kindly and loving. The way I hope the ending is for all of us mortals, with a friend to lead us on our way.

Author Reply: Eep! Hope I didn't lay a big guilt trip on you. (Heck, I haven't read all that much either, much to my shame.) But thanks for reading this!

This has got to be one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever read. It touched me deeply, brought tears to my eyes but not sad ones, for Merry and Pippin were off on this road together. But, oh, Pippin left all alone absolutely broke my heart! Wonderful job, simply marvelous!

I tend to avoid short stories, but I'm so very glad that I broke my rule and read this one. If you don't mind, I'll save it among my very favorites.

Thank you,

Jeodo Brandybuck

P.S. For some reason, my vision started blurring after reading this story, so this was a really hard letter to type. :o)

Excellent, espcially:

"But whenever they come to the end of their road, the kettle is already on the hearth, and their places are made ready at the table."

I loved that line. It's really great! What a nice story, I'm glad I read it....

Ah, a lovely story... Random thoughts along the way:

Merry banging his heels against the bedframe
comfortable hobbit smells of wool and pipeweed
*nice details amongst all those that bring your writing to life

Regrets over unfinished business, and Merry's wise "Time to close the book..." (After all, the business of life is never *quite* finished, is it?)

A lovely sentiment that brings tears to the eyes: "But whenever they come to the end of their road, the kettle is already on the hearth, and their places are made ready at the table."

It just gets better and better!
Pippin thought he knew what lay at the end: Cool sunlight and green grass, white shores behind a veil of silver rain, and loving arms held out in welcome. But...
Merry had walked this path himself, not so long ago, and he knew what Pippin was feeling.

I'm afraid I lost heart sometime before Challenge 8 and still had not found it by the time of Challenge 9, but I hope to go and read the stories one of these days... Thanks for pointing me towards a couple specific ones. It's always good to have a place to start. Foot by foot...

Author Reply: Eh, don't kick yourself-the stories aren't going anywhere (I hope and trust!) so there will always be a chance for a read and review of them. I wish I could say *I've* read all the stories myself, but er, I haven't got around to it, either. (Thus my plugging of these two excellent, recent stories that stand out in my memory, as balm for my conscience, which is poking me sharply and telling me to stop procrastinating. But they really are so very good.) As always I thank you for your very kind words, and I can't say enough how much they mean to me, that I made someone like you feel something deeply.
