Mid Winter's Eve  by Jay of Lasgalen 5 Review(s)

This was a wonderful story! You had me absolutely shivering with your descriptions of the blizzard, and I longed to be in Mirkwood sharing the Mid-winter's feast!

It's definitely now a favorite!

Author Reply: Thank you! This is such an old story (I can't believe I wrote it five years ago!) and it's wonderful to get a review for it. I'm glad you felt the blizzard was realistic - I live in an area where snow is very rare, so it was entirely imaginary :>)

Well Met Jay of Lasgalen,

I am so glad that you have moved some of your work here. This is a great site and a nice community of reviewers. I have written to you at ff.net, prior. It has been quite some time since I have read this piece.

You have captured a great image of elflings and their adars. One can easily see Elrohir and Elandan taking the opportunity to hit a fellow "warrior" if the chance presented itself. And having the King and Lord Elrond witnessing these innocent charmers is fun.

I also loved your description of the cold. I live in the Southern part of the U.S., so unless I am going on vacation, I have seldom experience snow (more that 2 or 3 inches thick). I found it quite nice that Legolas had inherited his adar's talent. Tolkien did state that Thranduil was majical (ex. the doors to his keep), and Wood Elves did have a special bond with their forest. Yes, I do realize that we start spliting hairs in how much Silvan, Teleri, and Sindarians would have the same "feel" for the woods. (ha!ha! I think here is something those Noldor simply are too refined to appreciate)

Yep, Brethil would know what was going on....he just takes some time to get there. LOL! wracking his brain to figure out what he did wrong this time.

It was nice that these elflings learned from this ordeal. But it was even nicer that their adars simply fussed and showed their love for these imps (and the boys still got to collect presents :) yeah!

As always, thank you for all of your hard work and please continue to entertain us all...

Minna Sedh,

Author Reply: Thank you for such a lovely long review! It's been a while since I last read this story too - I need to remind myself of the events. I like to think the elves had some magic - after all, Thranduil protected his realm without the help of one of the rings of power - and that at the very least Thranduil and his son have a special bond to the forest.

I hope the description of the blizzard sounded real - I live in England, and the most we get in the winter is the odd flurry of snow, but rarely anything more.
