As deep and mysterious as the dark that is its subject. Marvelously done! So true that there are some "childhood" fears that we never lose. And how much we all need a voice to comfort us in our fearful times!! VWD :)

I liked that. I rarely read hobbitfic, but this was well written, touching and gave Merry a real voice. Good work.

Author Reply: Well, then, if you rarely read hobbitfic, I'm doubly honoured that you took the time to read and comment.

This is really beautiful! The description of Merry's fear. It must be more then just a child's fear, and the hopeful note at the end. Wonderful. I can't believe I missed this one when reading the challenge stories.

Author Reply: Glad you stopped by! It's easy to miss a challenge story (or more than one). I so often get interrupted when reading, and then I forget where I was...

Thanks!

I would never have put Merry down as being scared of the dark, but actually it makes a lot of sense - he cannot be in control of it, and Merry does like to take charge. And, of course, after the Quest, dark must have been suffocating.

Love the bit about true Darkness on the ferry landing looking for them. Horrific image.

Ahh, the Frodo / Merry protection - I don't quite know who was protecting whom from what, but they needed each other so much.

And Pippin. A beacon in the darkest dark.

Author Reply: I don't know where the idea came from, originally, but it struck me that being afraid of the dark might make his facing the Witch King even more courageous an act than I'd thought...

And I bet he slept with the "lights on" for a long time after.

In full agreement about Pippin! (Now you make me want to write an angsty story about that beacon flickering and nearly going out. Aargh. When I'm right in the middle of some carefully-constructed Tolly angst, too!)

Thanks!

Glorious as usual, my dear. I am so sorry I havenot read more of your stories. I have a problem continuing with the long ones for lack of time, and most of your stories are pretty long. They are all wonderful, and I have them bookmarked but it's that time thing again. I really loved this; written almost as prose and it drew me in. I stick mostly to Frodo and his escapades, but was drawn to this one immediately. As children we all fear what lies under the bed or in the closet at night, seldom do we hear or read of how the darkness affects us as we grow to adulthood, especially if there is something sinister that has happened in our lives. I suppose it is acceptable from a child and we fear the reaction of our peers when we are older. The difference is the monsters become much more real and more ferocious as we age. All of us have our deep, dark fears at night; mostly things we cannot control or quell. I can only imagine how Merry or Frodo or any of them would feel when they finally lay down at end of day only to have the nightmares of their journey intrude upon them when they are most vulnerable. But I *DO* go on, don't I. Suffice it to say, in a nutshell, that you are an excellent author(ess?) and I apologize again for my lapse at reviewing sooner. Love to you, tree

P.S. I would be honored if you would read my fics as well, providing you have the time....Phantasm, Smoke and Mirrors (my first, so understand that ahead of time), and Twists of Fate.

Author Reply: My goodness, you're no slouch yourself! 40 chapters in one of those stories! I found your stories at ff.net this evening when I went to post an update (forgot about their renovations) and have put them on my to-read list. You're right about time being limited, but I'll do my best.

KWYM about sticking mostly to Frodo stories; I'm much the same way about Merry and Pippin. I will read a Frodo story on occasion, and have even written a few.

Thank you for the lovely review!
