Branwyn's Baubles  by Branwyn 3 Review(s)

This part has always been hard to for me to read. How could anyone abandon two little childred to die? Perhaps the woodland creatures saved them. That is something we will never know unless someone decides to write a tale about it.

At least one had mercy upon them.

Oh, this is so poignant; the poor little kids lost and hungry in the forest, with only a chestnut from a squirrel to give them sustenance. I like to think that they found a way to survive, or some kind soul took them in, and they spent long, quiet lives somewhere, away from further violence.

Author Reply: Tolkien gives us only dark hints about what became of them; but since it is unknown, I too like to imagine that their story had a safe and peaceful ending. Perhaps a charcoalmaker or woodcutter found them in the forest? :-)
