Yes, I too have always wondered about the hobbits parents reaction...Paladin's a bit of a hothead, isn't he? *smiles* I love Tooks.... Author Reply: Paladin definitely is a hothead - but then, who would not be when learning that your son has gone away to face unknown danger?

wow this is great~!!! wonderful story~!!! i really like it and am only saddened to see it come to a close... perhaps sequel to what happens when Merry and Pippin do come back to their fathers a year later? that would be interesting indeed~!!! =) i love your style of writing a lot... something like breaking up two stages of their conversation with somethign like this: "Their eyes met and though it took a long moment of gazing into each others eyes Paladin finally returned to his desk, lifted up his stool again and sat down. He didn't say anything but Saradoc knew he was all ears. The sun had set and the faint light was gone. Now only the crackling of the fire remained though its faint light did hardly reach the Thain's desk. " is so ingenious =) I love your description of how it was at that moment. i love this story~ great job~!! :) Author Reply: Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the story. Anyway, there is no sequel planed. I have run out of bunnies for this story. Perhaps some time in the future :)

Thank you for adding this extra chapter. The first chapter was heart-wrenching, as was this one in its own way, yet you've added the fathers' next step: trusting their sons to do what's best, while continuing with the responsibilities of Thain and Master. They're fine examples of "They also serve who only stand and wait." Well done, Lily! Author Reply: Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad to have shown a believable picture of the fathers' reactions.

Wonderful! I'm so glad you continued this! This conversation is beautifully written, and I especially love these... "The two of them together…" Saradoc shook his head. "Frodo didn't have the slightest chance." "We cannot help them where they are, but we can see to it that what they wanted to protect will be protected. We shall guard the border of our land as well as we can to avoid another attack like the one on Crickhollow. We will see to it that the Horn-call of Buckland won't sound again in the next hundred years and no hobbit has to fear shadows in the dark" Author Reply: I am so happy you enjoyed this. Thank you for commenting on your favourite lines.

Excellent story, although I would put an "-ed" on the end of "flabbergast" if I were writing it. But I can certainly imagine Saradoc and Paladin reacting exactly in this manner. Too bad they couldn't guard the souther borders of the Shire, too. Author Reply: Thank you for reading! I think they did guard the southern borders of the Shire as well. Perhaps there were too few guards and they had been outnumbered.

I was directed to this fantastic piece through the Middle Earth News community on LJ. I'm glad I followed the link. What a great piece. I hope that you may choose to write about Paladin's own thoughts on the matter. Very well written. Lovely. Author Reply: Thank's a lot! The Middle-earth News led you here? That's great! Hm... Paladin's POV... right after Saradoc told him about his son's whereabouts maybe. Well, let us wait and see what my muses say :)

Very nice. I never thought of how their parents' would have reacted. And of course, Merry and Pippin wouldn't have told them! "Take good care of yourself and the lads, Frodo, and bring them home safely." Little did he know, it would be the other way around. Author Reply: Saradoc has to be glad that Merry und Pippin did accompany Frodo or he might have never seen him again. Thank you for your comment!

Marvelous! And I never thought about Saradoc finding the keys missing -- of course he would. Very nice! Author Reply: Thank you so much! I actually thought about the keys only when I re-wrote some parts and suddenly remembered a scene to come in another story of mine.
