That was powerful stuff, I thought you said you couldn't do shorts! Very nice job! Author Reply: Thanks, Sophia. No, for some reason all my story lines always seem to be long-involved/drawn-out affairs. My goal is to do more of these little vignettes and cover a bunch of different aspects of different men of Middle Earth. Thanks for the review amongst your school work! Lea

Well begun, Leaward! This first chapter deals with the subject of death in a tender way, as is needed when explaining to a child. Yet, as a Ranger, Tarkil's father does not sugar-coat the truth. It is pleasant to see this glimpse of Tarkil at such a young age. :-) I am looking forward to the next part of the tale! Elė Author Reply: Elė, Glad you enjoyed it! LOL, the next part of the tale -- well, I'm at three full stories now! And I know you've read the first part already -- and were there at Tarkil's 'conception' so to speak. Thanks for reviewing here!

This is an excellent story. I've always wondered about the Dunedain, their customs and how they lived. As a warrior society, they would bound to lose men. The returned sword is a very poignant symbol of a fallen warrior. The fact that each man's sword is different is very fitting for Middle-earth. There was no mass production (except, maybe, among the orcs) and valuable possessions like swords would be unique. This underlines the difference between most of the cultures of Middle-earth and modern, western culture which makes the story very real and believable. Author Reply: Haleth! I was sure I'd replied to your review, I'm sorry for the delay. The swords being different -- yes, I would imagine that each would have to be fitted to their owner and each one would have distinctive styles based on who made them and how much the person could afford to pay -- although I would think Rangers would be well equipped. I couldn't see them bringing the body home to bury but somehow the family had to have something brought home and the sword seemed to be one of those heirlooms that would have been treasured. So we finally meet Beleg. What a sweet introduction into Tarkil's family. Some references regarding swords in your story a promise to keep makes more sense now. I find myself wanting to know more and more about this ranger family. if Tarkil had so many brothers... what happened to those who died. Well we know of Valandur... not that I want to send more plotbunnies your way.. but :) Author Reply: Rhapsody! I just found this review by accident -- Yahoo mail must be acting up as I haven't received it in my email yet. Glad you enjoyed this. I hope to write more about Tarkil's brothers. I think you have met them all now: Mallor, Valandur and Haldon in Promises to Keep; Celepharn here. And you may not recognize the name of the sword in the house Beleg mentions that Celepharn will carry -- Berior -- is the name of Tarkil's sword in Promises to Keep and the start of Two of Thirty-One. So that might give you a bit of an idea of what happens to Celepharn. I've just written about how Beleg dies for another story, but it will be a while before that is put up. And plotbunnies are constantly nipping at me -- I really need to get those shin-guards out! Thanks for reviewing -- it's nice to hear from readers as always!

Oh you dear sweet thing. that was such a beautiful story! Tears I swear. I just can't seem to express. the bit with tarkil at the end, wanting a new sword. so sad! You are such a fantastic writer, you've caught the many emotions of this story Perfectly. my heart was beating at the beginning with the villagers waiting to see if there was an extra sword! smiles over "what's a neek?" and such sadness with young tarkil at the thought of loosing his father and brother. How many times i've wished i had MY father and brothers back more than any possession i own. Once again.. Big clappiings!!! Author Reply: Thanks, B7! This story went through so many permutations and re-writings, it just wasn't funny! I am glad I finally got the essence and emotion that it needed. It was also fun to write a child!Tarkil. Glad you enjoyed it!

Great story about the rangers, and the meaning of if they are carrying a extra sword. Liked the reasoning behind Tarkil wanting a new sword. Author Reply: Thanks, Grumpy -- nice to see a repeat reader/reviewer! The idea of the sword coming home has been rattling around in my head for a while, and it finally got the telling I'd wanted for it. It's so nice to see people are enjoying it.

Wow, that was really nicely done. The rangers are some of my favorite characters in the books and I always wished we knew more of their individual stories. You definitely did a wonderful job. The traditions around the swords were creative. I did feel a little sorry for the older son who had to take care of the horse. He didn't really do anything! lol. The fate of the oldest child. Well, this is a good thing. I have found a new author. Haven't found one that really interested me in a long time. I shall go take a look at your other stories. Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed it! I love the Rangers too and they're such an unexplored area. LOL about the fate of the oldest child, I did think of that when I wrote it. I'm still a fairly new writer so it shouldn't take you long to go through my short list. Thanks again for the review -- they make my day!

Well done, Leaward. We can see the father's reactions and those of both brothers too. This is a nice slice of life in the Angle. Author Reply: Thank you, Daw! I have had this story on the back burner for months now ... SOA just gave me the shove I needed to polish it. Glad you enjoyed it.
