I'm terribly sorry, but my dear ass sounds so wrong

Nice job here on the gap filler. i love getting those little details. I was glad to get both points of view, Pippin and Merry's. Aragorn's amazement at the hobbit's healing was endearing. Nicely written with a good attention to detail.

Auntie:

Wow! Tolkien would be impressed by this little "filler"! I can say, with all awe and modesty, that you sent me for my copy of LOTR to see why you didn't note what parts of the Book you'd copied!! As I read from where Merry awakens in the HoH thru the end, I kept thinking, "that sounds so familiar... it MUST have come directly from the book!" So I look up the scene in Book 5 of Return of the King, The Houses of Healing, to see what you copied down, and what do you know? YOU DIDN'T COPY A BLESSED THING!!

You picked up the texture and flavor of his writing and, eventhough you were movie-gap filling, I SWEAR, the words were so perfect... I am just amazed!

My 2 favorite lines of yours are:

1) Gimli stumped about in the darkness, muttering angrily to himself. When he found Peregrin Took he was going to pound that young rascal so deeply into the ground he would never be able to extricate himself. --- I laughed out loud and scared my cats! OMG LOVE that line!!

2) My dear ass," Pippin laughed, "your pack is lying right beside you, and it is still a good hour until breakfast, although I’m sure I can round something up for you." --- I so that that was IN THE BOOK!

Wow. you are a wonderful writer. Keep up the good work!

Did I mention how much I love this story??? :)

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad to know you felt this had the flavor of Tolkien, that's a great compliment!

This is a GREAT filler for the movie! Like the author, I had wanted to know how Merry ended up unconscious next to an oliphaunt, with the dead body of an orc atop him. I had even speculated that the orc was about to kill Merry when the legions of the dead came through--saving Merry just in the nick of time. It was something I really would have liked to have seen in the extended version.

I was greatly disappointed that they decided to drop the whole thing about the Black Breath in the extended version of RotK. I understand PJ thought that it would take too long to set that up. What a shame, because it truly shows the bravery of Eowyn and Merry, to face such a death at the hands of the Witch King and that only the healing hands of the King could save them. I saw footage from a LOTR documentary that indicated they had filmed more of Pippin finding Merry...with Merry gasping and convulsing in pain as if being taken under by the Black Breath. Perhaps they'll include that scene as a 'deleted scene' in a 10th anniversary edition of RotK! (Please, Mr. Jackson???)

Merry is my favorite character so I'm always on the lookout for good, angst-filled stories about my favorite Hobbit. So thank you for this movie filler!

I haven't seen this footage, drat it all!

Oh well, I'm glad you liked the story. :)
