This is wonderful! It's interesting because I am in the middle of re-reading the Appendices to LotR, and just last night I read the part about Arvedui and the Lossoth, and I thought to myself, "This would make a wonderful tale; I wish someone would write about it." And today I went here and saw this story. This is wonderful so far. I do have a few questions: where did you get the idea of Heskil (Javaala), and also, of what political status is Hanno? I thought that Arvedui gave the ring of Barahir to the Chief of the Lossoth, and yet you seem to speak of a king in your story, so I'm a bit confused. Nonetheless, this is very interesting and I am really enjoying it. I look forward to the next parts! Author Reply: Thank you! I suspect Heskil/Javaala was inspired partly by C.S. Lewis's White Witch and partly by the Norse goddess of death Hel. She has no basis in canon. Her Elvish name however is from 'Lost Tales' book one, meaning 'Winter One' it was a nickname for 'Fui Nienna' then the wife of Mandos, later his sister and a much less sinister figure. Hanno is headman of his village - Suulka - and was chief of the band of hunters Arvedui met. I am postulating a large and relatively sophisticated kingdom in the North including the lands around the Ice Bay and the so-called Northern Wastes above the Grey Mountains and Iron Hills. This is of course entirely AU. | |
