Spellbound  by shirebound 29 Review(s)

Ah, I have waited for a quiet time in which to savor this. I am delighted to see you take on darker themes, yet still retain that uniquely 'shirebound' flavor. The opening paragraphs were beautiful, lyrical, disturbing and foreboding. I was almost relieved to see our dear hobbits again, and be swept up into their inclusive, comfortable family circle. I loved how Pippin's eyes shine at the thought of ghosts, and how he inches closer to Merry. And how you end the chapter on a dark note. This will be a wonderful story, I know it.

Wow. This story is absolutely brilliant! Such a powerful beginning--it drew me right in and I couldn't stop reading! I must get to the next chapter! ^^ It's so nice to read a story like this; no one has touched on this subject and this is extremely well-written. Keep it up!! :)

I meant to read this a while ago and the notice for it got lost in the shuffle. This is off to a perfectly chilling start. I'm eager to see where your Master's touch takes this.

OK, I couldn’t resist—your other stories on my “to read” list will just have to wait a bit longer. This just sounded too interesting…and for once I’d like to review a WIP!

I’ve always found the Barrow-Downs chapter one of the most mysterious, creepy and fascinating in LOTR, and am thrilled that you’re writing about it—and that you’ve clearly done your appendices homework, too!

This exchange conjured up for me the strangest mental image of Pippin as Winnie-the-Pooh: “‘That was wonderful,’ Pippin said, patting his stomach contentedly…‘Silly Took,’ Frodo said fondly.” Wasn’t Christopher Robin always calling Pooh ‘silly old bear’? From there it’s not much of a stretch to ‘hobbit of very little brain’—something I can just imagine Gandalf calling Pip!

I wonder what reward a Barrow-wight desires?

Oh, Janet, this is simply bone-chilling and ominous! I actually gasped when the POV shifted to that of the barrow wight's, and he...*it* was sensing The One Ring! And the way the wights send and receive messages through the elements (the earth, the mist) is brilliant and effectively spooky! I also love Frodo and Merry telling Pip how they got to know the story of the old kingdoms of the North, and how with Pip around no one can stay somber for long. And as always, your way with cliffhangers made me yearn for MORE! SOON! :)

What a fantastic fic, Janet. Thanks so much for giving me the link to it.

*shudders* I love the way you described the thoughts of the barrow-wights, described them period reallyt. The frist bit and the last bit in this chapter was really creepy, I'm glad all of the lights on on still ;) The bit about the wights feeling that the Witch-King was back and searching gave me shivers!

I like the way you write Frodo. That he would always be a sourse of information and all. Looking forward to more!
