Glorfindel's Folly  by Nilmandra 21 Review(s)
LadyMorrigan87Reviewed Chapter: 1 on 2/21/2006
This was such a sweet story. I can see the twins and Glorfindel doing something like this. It was also lovely to see how much Celebrian and Elrond loved each other.

Author Reply: This was great fun to write - I need to write more adolescent twins, I think! Thanks for reading. This is a joyful time to show in the lives of the Imladris elves.

ahahahahahahaha that was SOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY! wow, you have a great sense of humor *wipes tears of laughter away from face* i would have given anything, ANYTHING, mind you, to see that scene. well, i would have given 1000 bucks just to see imladris, but now, i would so totally give anything. a tripping accident! well, now we all know that the things we intend to do only turn out to be half as funny as the things that we DON'T intend to do. i can just see celebrian lying on the table with elrond spotless and the twins and glorfindel sprawled out on the floor below. but what a great story. i'm certainly glad erestor laughed. ^_^

i have a new website: www.councilofelrond.com/members/LadySaruman. plz come and visit it in your spare time. and, if you're a member, you can sign my guestbook!!! oh, and on another matter: you know how the author submission thing said that i have to email a completed story to see if it met the requirements of this site? well, the story is almost complete now; i've been making it up along the way. then, when it's done, i can send it and wait for your decision!!!

hershey's kisses/hugs,

Author Reply: Elrohir is glad you enjoyed this :D He got over his embarrassment, silly elf.

Very funny... I thinK Glorfindel enjoyes these games...He involved the twins and it became even more interesting...
Elrohir had his foot in the wrong place...
Very cute...

Author Reply: Glorfindel lives for these games! I love that description of him as 'fearless and full of joy' - he has already died, so he has little to fear, and he can find joy easily in the smallest of things...perhaps most especially with children, who share that same innocence.

And yes, Elrohir...in all of my stories he always seems to have something happen... poor elfling!

One itty-bitty mud fight! That's . . . headstrong. Reckless needs more! Much more! And I long to see Ada and Nana dealing with it!

Author Reply: Its funny, when I wrote those scenes of Celebrian's youth, I actually considered many of her misdeeds, having listed some of her recklessness that made her mother appreciate her parents much more! The funny thing was that neither of her parents considered her a difficult child, which tells you something about them!

'I was far more reckless,” she confided.' How? How? Please tell us how!

'“You must look to Elrond for the inheritance of Elrohir’s comedy!' Ditto!

Author Reply: LOL! Have you forgotten the mud fight? But there are other stories, too. Perhaps Celebrian will tell me more :D I really love writing about her. I am going to break my own heart.

And Elrond...well, perhaps Celebrian will tell us a few stories there..or maybe Glorfindel.

Wasn't it a silver dress, though?? Or am I imagining things??? :-)

Author Reply: My memory might be as bad as the twins recollection! Their naneth did much more than help (and that slip was intentional), and the slippers were pink. I may have to go back and see what color the dress was, as I don't remember!

Delightful! I loved this quick look at Glorfindel in prime form and the adolescent twins. Not mention Celebrian who clearly is Imladris's true ruler. No one, not even Elrond, can tame her. :) There was a real feeling of joy in this story. It reads as if you were having fun writing it. :)

Author Reply: Thank you, Linda. I hope this made you smile, as it did me in writing it.

I think Celebrian knows how to manage her husband, but I am inclined to think Elrond might manage her as well - I'll have to ask him! But I like the idea of an utamed Celebrian - in my mind, she is very much the light of Imladris.

What fun! You write humour so well. Has Glorfindel any idea what he’s done by getting the twins involved in the ‘follies’?? Hmm… maybe he does. I see the pink dress incident hasn’t been forgotten, although I think Naneth did a little more than ‘help’ with that ;-) And I’m still laughing at the protests of “I was not naked!”!!

I love the differences between the twins – with Elladan all excited about being involved and Elrohir wanting to know *why*… Glorfindel’s answer to Erestor’s claim about the statue in the courtyard was rather, uh, ingenious. I think what I love most about it is the lengths to which he’ll go to help a friend with no thought at all to his own dignity – and the residents of Imladris seem to respond with fond amusement.

You know, no matter what story of yours that I read, I seem to end up saying “poor Erestor” at some point! I really did feel bad for him here, though. His melancholy must be deep indeed if it’s affecting him physically. He’s entitled to feel some sense of loneliness and to wallow in it for a while, but I’m glad he accepts the concern of his friends and realises that they’re his family now.

I love the idea of Elladan and Elrohir singing the dwarven walking song! Maybe in front of their grandparents…

I got completely caught up in the excitement of the twins at the feast! I was just dying to know what OLE would turn out to be but wow, you went one better! Oh, and what a wonderful custom for the young elves to carry out the desserts! Where’d you get that from?

My jaw is sore from grinning at the description of what happened. The absolute funniest part has to be Elrohir’s brave “I think this would have been delicious.” LOL! Poor Cook.

Elrond still so pristine, trying his best to remain so around his mischievous wife, was just hilarious!

And yay, Erestor laughed! So everything was worthwhile. I adore the ending, with Glorfindel’s contentment that everyone he loves is at peace and happy and Erestor not only drawn out of his sadness but openly grateful to his friend. I always love your Erestor and Glorfindel but I think they shine brightest when around each other. You draw their friendship amazingly well, and I was thrilled with this glimpse into the wonderful and rather infamous world of their follies! :-)

Author Reply: Thanks, Dot. You are right- it seems 'Poor Erestor' and 'Poor Elrohir' are a common theme! I am glad you liked this little attempt at humor - Glorfindel is an extremely self assured elf who does not mind in the least having fun poked at him. He claims he won't regret involving the twins, as he is confident he can stay a few steps ahead of them. I say 'we'll see'. Arrogant elf.

I am glad you like their friendship - it was born out of the evil times of the Second Age and I think it will endure to the end of time. :)

From Blue: I am honored that you wrote a story because I asked for one. I do not know about mandates, but that is definitely friendship. I have enjoyed all your stories, but especially Glorfindel, the prankster. Elrond and Celebrían made me feel right at home (my wife does the same to me). You need to work less and write more.

From (and Nancy): How did I get in this! Blue laughed so often during the ‘reading’ that I had a hard time keeping a straight face. He said he knew from the moment Glorfindel went to ‘help’ that things were going to get interesting.

As always I adore your Elrohir; such a tender-hearted, sweet elfling. Any time you put Glorfindel and Erestor in proximity follies are bound to occur, particularly enjoyable for those not directly involved.

It is good to see Elves at play, celebrating, free for a brief time from the ever-present reality of endless war and the ‘long defeat’; peace was a rare, precious gift, a time for love, rejoicing and merriment, creating and begetting. Thank you for the glimpse into life as it should have been for the Firstborn.

Glorfindel represents to me a shining example of Elvenkind at its best and brightest. Boldly joyful in the face of uncertain times, true friend, faithful companion, fearless protector, ablaze with the Light of Valinor. Thank you for the visions of Arda-according-to-Tolkien.

Author Reply: Thank you for your kind words - I am truly glad that you both enjoyed it. Glorfindel will want to shake Blue's hand one day, for helping him get more 'screen time'. Fearless and full of joy - definitely.

I do love Elrohir too - he is comic relief each time he opens his mouth! I hope the elves had such enjoyment and clean fun as often as they could. Such long lives in a fallen world makes it understandable how melancholy could set it.

Absolutely wonderful story, Nilmandra! What a lark! I'd love to know what they'd REALLY planned! hee hee!!

Author Reply: I'd love to know, too! Glorfindel is withholding that information from me in case he can use it at a later time. Silly elf.
