Well, Pippin did better in Moria than I ever would have, scary childhood experiences or no... :-P

A perfect explanation for Pippin's fear of the jump! A very good read.

Author Reply: Bless you, I just now saw this! (Hopefully this will go to an email address that is still active...)

Thanks!

Beautiful! I thought of Wheel on the School when I first read the phrase "ditch-jumping!"

I think you have the relationship of Merry and Pip just right for this part of their lives.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing! I didn't see this until now...

Yes, "Wheel on the School" was where I got the idea for ditch-jumping. Great book!

First, I'm struck by the way the language and details make this very realistic. I can really see these kids goofing around like this. (I chose to assume they were playing cricket rather than baseball because that seemed more Tolkienish, and I have heard of cricket matches lasting for days! So Pip was right that this could go on for a while. Ah yes! And I see from the next chapter that I made the right choice.)

I've always been interested in the way this gang of hobbit children grew up in such a crowd - with older ones looking after younger ones and adults not always sure what's going on. I knew families like that when I was growing up.

Nice drawing together of past and "present."

Author Reply: Hey there, Daw,

I was just reading through this old story and stumbled over your review. (So, yes, a review never goes to waste!)

I knew families like that when I was growing up, too...

Thanks for commenting.
