Pitfalls of the Palantir  by Haleth 6 Review(s)
shadowfaxReviewed Chapter: 47 on 10/24/2008
Wow....I have just loved this story and the two characters of Haleth and Inglor!

I had first read the prequel 'The Finder' and there, was very much confused who the finder was and who the elf was. Then I saw this story and was happy by the length of it (the longer the better!) so decided to read it.

I am confused about Inglor and the elf called Gildor Inglorion. Is he Inglor's son or it is a different Inglor???

I love how Haleth and Inglor's past are yet untold (that means that many tales from you!) and am waiting for more from you.

I would love you to write some parts or entire chapters from Inglor's POV since he hardly gets a few paragraphs. It would be interesting to know about his thoughts especially thoughts on Haleth.

So according to Inglor, they are engaged? And Haleth has no clue at all about the significance of the ring? Lol, ROTFL-ing business.

I read one of your replies to a review whichwent something like this: Inglor and Haleth...it would be good while it lasted but such a tragedy when Haleth died. Inglor would be heartbroken.

But whether they do confess themselves to be lovers or not, I imagine Inglor would still be very heartbroken when Haleth dies or if he has to leave for Valinor. He loves her, doesn't matter if its acknowledged or not, but ehr death would devastate him either way.
So wouldn't it be better for them to spend some happy moments together?
(Of course that's a hint to you to get them together :D)

Author Reply: Wow. Thank-you for reviewing. Your well considered comments certainly made me think.

I can see how The Finder would be confusing. The only thing familiar is the location.

Gildor Inglorion means Gildor, son of Inglor. Inglor was originally Finrod's name. Finrod was Galadriel's brother and one of the Elf Lords of the First Age. After FotR was published Tolkien changed his mind about giving Inglor/Finrod a son; Finrod left his love, Amarie, in Valinor and never had a son in Middle-earth. Unfortunately, Tolkien never got around to changing the name of Gildor's father or perhaps he did not think it necessary as he had changed Inglor's name to Finrod. There's your useless bit of Tolkien trivia for the day.

It would be very tantalizing to catch a glimpse of what's going on in Inglor's mind. Unfortunately, it's incredibly hard to write. He thinks he's completely transparent in his actions and feelings and to another elf, he probably is. Haleth runs into trouble because she's not an elf and doesn't share his culture or social expecations. It leads to all kinds of misunderstandings and missed cues on the part of both of them.

Yes, Inglor will be unhappy when Haleth dies. But elves see marriage differently than mortals. For them there is only one spouse, even if the other dies. It's very cruel to give Inglor a few decades of happiness at the expense of an eternity of hopeless loneliness, which would be the case if he married Haleth. He'll be very unhappy when she dies, but if they don't marry there is the slim chance he could recover in several centuries and find someone new. He is good at finding things.

Thank-you again for reviewing.

So Inglor knows Finrod does he? I wonder how they met, and what he told him.
I can't help but wonder how long it will take for them to just tell? This is getting tiresome ;)

Author Reply: Thank-you, Selene.

Yes, Inglor knows Finrod. I'd like to know how they met, too. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I know about as much about Inglor's origins as Haleth does. If they haven't told each other how they feel to this point, it seems unlikely they'll ever manage.

Unless one or both of them thinks there is nothing left to lose.

Hmmmm.....That gives me an idea.

Thank-you for reviewing.

This is a lovely ending-that-is-not-an-ending - and I long to learn more about the adventures of Haleth and Inglor. There is definitely more to them - and more between them - than is apparent. And, however impossible it might be, I would love to see their relationship develop.

I enjoyed rereading this. Fingers crossed it precedes some extra adventures!

Author Reply: Thank-you, Bodkin, for this review and for all of the reviews. You have been more than generous with your time and it is very much appreciated.

I will see what I can do about posting more stories. There are at least two other tales featuring Haleth and Inglor. One is completed. The other desperately needs editting before it will be fit for public consumption.

On one hand it would be good to see the two of them together. On the other, it would be such a tragedy when Haleth died.

Thank-you again.

ohforgoodnesssake Haleth! What is she doing! Just GET ON WITH IT!! Having said that.... it is a bit of a rejection if he doesnt respond- but she must be blind!
I love the unassuming way Inglor tells her he knows Finrod -made me smile. And while I'm here- just want to say again how much I laighed at the asmathic dragon! Oh- and dwarves version of porn! Brilliant!

But it feels like we're almost there and I am sad - so please start thninking about your next one.

Author Reply: Thank-you, Ziggy.

Once more Haleth looks directly at the obvious and doesn't see it. The two of them are from very different societies. They completely miss each other's signals.

Is Haleth afraid of being rejected or afraid of not being rejected?

The poor old dragon. Tolkien states Smaug was the last Fire Drake. There is mention of Cold Drakes on the Withered Heath on one of the maps. All of the magical creatures seem to be dying off, so it wasn't a big jump to go from there to the ancient, decrepit, asthamtic dragon.

I'll try to think about the next story. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank-you again for all of the reviews. They were very encouraging.

Awww! This was a sharp, welcome contrast to last chapter. I like the melancholy tone of their wanderings, now that everything is over, and the Plantir "safe" The dwarven porn channel was such a hoot. GOld, after all! Of course! poor HAleth. ANd their quiet bantering about their early adventures...perfect, fun but reminicent at the same time.

I love it how subtly you show the change in their relationship, but still they are their own selves, Haleth sticking a foot in her mouth at the lesser occasion and Inglor his how wise, sidelong clueless and exasperating self... yet I liked it how he almost raged when Haleth joked with Finrodīs death. AS I said around the first chapters of this long, wonderful adventure, I, for one, took them for their namesakes and have not been disappointed, even if they turn out being descendants.

I do not want ths to end.

Author Reply: Thank-you, perelleth.

I'm glad you liked the change in tone. The last four or five chapters were fairly fast paced and it seemed best to make things slower before the end.

It was a lot of fun to write this story and I'm happy you enjoyed it and very grateful you took so much time to review each chapter. The feedback is very much appreciated.

Glad to see that our favorite mismatched duo is safe... I hate to see the adventure end, but, that's the author's perogative. *sniff* I have to say that I have enjoyed the trip immensely,on the edge of my seat the whole time. A bit of speculation - is he actually Finrod ?
never beta read before, but, I would be willing to give it a go for you.... gives me the inside scoop if nothing else!

Author Reply: Thank-you, vampfan. The story couldn't go on forever.

Is Inglor actually Finrod? I think it's best to leave it up to individual readers to decide. Certainly a case can be made for it. There is almost no one left in Middle-earth who would recogize Finrod, so who can say?

Thank-you for reviewing so often. It's really encouraging to know people are following the story and enjoying it.

If you're serious about beta reading, please contact me via Email so I can send you the story I need help with. It's the tale of how the two of them met.

Thank-you again!
