I realise that this review is (many!) years late, but I come back to this story so often that I had to leave a review. Your stories are some of my very favourites, and your Celebrimbor is my favourite, as well - he's my favourite character! I love how sympathetic you make him, and so likeable. It is a shame that you seem to have finished writing, but thank you for writing stories that I've enjoyed for so many years.

Hello, Jenninfer!

I am glad you like the story! I have indeed been on a long hiatus from posting. And I do have an ending for this. But, only in draft. I will be slowly finishing it, though.

Thank you so much for the unexpected review!

I never tire of your delicate, detailed style. Actions, emotions, deep thoughts, atmosphere are allconvenyed in such amount of telling detail thatinstead of overwhelmingitis always thought provoking. I can always feel myself again inside the sophisticated atmosphere of that palace and its elegant, cunning, inteligent dwellers of many races. The backstory is always rippling at the surface, most intriguingly!

And Rhiss´is a new, refreshing pov. And Glamien a welcome acquaintance for the boy. Their accent was lovely, and also how they exhchanged news about what they both missed! I had tolaugh at the pancakes particularly, for it is so. TO each and every exile, the food of his home is the very and only true food! There are few things that can make you feel aborad deeper than food.

And of course I had to love this line: "‘Tis a reward of service to see far away places and meet all manner of folk"

Rhiss' youth and adventurousness, and his great heart full of hopes are a delight. I was lookingforward to seeing him intrude into whatever comedy are Elrovail and Hrassa playing, but a peek inot Celebrimbor's workshoppartocularly when strange sounds are coming out form it looks promising enough.I cannot tell you how I enjoy each chapter of this wonderfully rich tapestry. ANd also how youweave the silvan culture so effortlesslyinto the apparentl tightereldarin court. THe mix is one I would not mind have known.

... now, I feel overwhelmed. I'm truly glad you enjoy the story.

I am especially glad you liked the page and the nanny interacting. Huzzah! That was the whole point about getting a taste of..eh...from home.

You know the rewards of service better than most. :)

Well, ya know, things go the way they go, and Celebrimbor's apartment may not be it. Luckily for Rhiss. I think Eregion and Ost-in-Edhil was the place where the two most diverse cultures would have gotten their first broad look at each other. A lone Silvan in Gil-Galad's court or a Noldor in the Greenwood would certainly be intresting, but not change either's world. A returning native filled with new ideas and experiences can. All courtesy of their Sindarin (read Galadrim) mutual friends hosting the grand event. After getting the Exiles and Dwarves to foot the bill, of course.

Thank you so much for the review! I always look forward to them! :D

Hello Redheredh!
I was so happy to see all this Rhiss… it’s almost overwhelming.
“Her face glowed with fading starlight” oooh, that I like.
“Unnecessarily mean” almost makes her sound nice. :D
A mortal woman? Interesting. So potentially she could be serving a little Celebrian till she’s grey. Kinda weird. But I’d like to learn more about her.
I liked the nanny more and more with each sentence. Almost impervious to the Princess’ charms, able to scold her, even. Why, she even got her to apologize.
Heh, Rhiss is not the only one who is disorientated by Celebrian’s moods.
I enjoyed Glamien and Rhiss’ woodland accents. And of course I was fascinated by the tree blight – definitely devastating for woodelves. Somehow I never thought of their forests having those kinds of problems. What a terribly long book that would make: History of Tree Blights in Arda from the Waking to the Present. On a light note, the danger of the woolen rugs was hilarious.
Runnybread and mallorn syrup!!! Ah, now I’m drooling on the keyboard. *mops*
Fun chapter; as always, worth the wait! ;)

Hey Kitt Otter!

Oh dear, too much for you too? And next chapter we're still with him. Maybe I should switch the chapters around...

*g* I like that too.

Wait, is that sarcasm I hear? :) Actually, I think people with authority think it necessary to be firm and not be swayed by sentiment when it comes to making people do as they think those people should do. A young child would call that being mean, although also understand why that is so. Goodness, do I remember rightly that you have kids? So, you know what I am talking about here.

Since elven children grow between 25 to 30 percent slower than human children, that may be so. Although, the Professor did say that they are walking and out of diapers in less than a year. I chalk that up to grow spurts, though. Hmm, we do outlive the majority of our household pets. Each of whom we care for and treat as one of the family, I would hope.

Glamien had been at her job for a long time before Celeborn hired her. Yes, he chose her, not Galadriel. :)

Darn, does the little princess appear to have ADS? Personally, I think she is experimenting with her fledgling powers and has become overly confident.

I thought of a blight because elves tend not to get sick themselves. An enemy of any foresight/patience might experiment with a different angle of attack in order to kill many with the least effort. Also, in UT, Galadriel tells Celebrimbor that she would like something, which is the Elessar he makes, to help her preserve the forests. As well, I liked the idea that the Silvan learned some things from this that helped them survive the creeping malaise that spread over the Greenwood and turned it into the Mirkwood.

The crackle of static has betrayed the presence of many a sneak to others. I could have gone on about hair standing on end...

LOL! Here's a clean napkin. Now, please pass the butter.

Thank you so much for saying that! Your reviews are appreciated!

Yay! A NEW chapter! *dances around for joy*

I liked Rhiss' observations, though I felt that the story is starting to move a bit too slowly - I really want to get to Celeborn's ballroom dance, let alone Hrassa and Celebrian's tea party!

Still, Rhiss is very very cute! I loved the detail about static electricity and carpet.

Some typing mistakes as well - which some sentences didn't make sense, unfortunately.

Keep updating pretty please!

I understand you wishes, but it will be a bit more before more in the great hall.

Cute! *chuckle* I really think he would protest being called cute. Especially in front of Celebrian.

Shoot! That's what happens when you don't have a beta. But, please! Won't you email me and let me know where I goofed?

Slowly, but surely.

Thank you very much for reading and reviewing! It is appreciated.

Thank-you very much! I was delighted to see this, and got to enjoy it th weekend!

I had almost forgotten this poor kid burdened with the precious bow! And it is wonderful to see how you manage to transform a trip from one room to another 8 across a large palace, granted) into such an interesting adventure full of details that might split out into little different adventures of its own! The bowels of celeborn and galadriel's residence look as itnersting as the outer common halls!

The conversation with the butler was priceless. Little Rhiss stood his ground like a resourceful, sstubborn elf. celeborn would be proud of him, but I bet he already knows his good qualities! This boy is charming. I really love his pov, how he ponders and weighs and learns and reasons his way all through the populated corridors and the bred or malicious servants. Duplcity, rancor towards Hrassa... well, this trip is full of lessons for him!

Even the unexpected discovery of the last guard! A Silvan! And a well behaved and courteous one at that! i really loved his surprise, and how he checked his findings with his assumptions! This Rhisss is really an endearing side character!

Will Hrassa take him under his wing, before Elovaril flayls him with her tongue? That ending was a real cliffhanger! thank you very much!

I am glad you enjoyed it! :) Lately, getting anything into shape to post has seemed impossible.

Oh, I had all kinds of things in mind for the great hall, but found it did not move things along. While, Rhiss needed to be set up for his integral role. Sorry if that was a spoiler.

I am happy that you like how he is turning out. *g*

If I ever get the next chapter done, I hope what happens next turns out to be entertaining.

Thank you for the review! They're always appreciated!

Hello Redheredh!
*not believing eyes* Really, truly an update? And all about Rhiss!
I enjoyed being in his head. *laughs* All those impertinent remarks that never came out. “I am not your son!” - Ha! I so wanted to say that for him.
Ah, I do feel for him, being a homesick country boy who misses his grandfather. I liked hearing his voice inside of Rhiss.
The description of the bow was very good; it was like I could feel its living wood too.
Interesting about the little politics and intrigues among the servants. Even (or especially) among them you have to be careful with whom you talk and serve. So I guess Elrovail’s not the only one to watch out for. *g* It’s kind of funny how the Lord and Lady’s names gave the little fellow safe passage.
*jumps* That scared me – I was sure it was Elrovail. Celebrian! Should have figured. By Manwe’s blowdryer, she’s a bossy little thing.
Now I must know if Rhiss will ever get to speak with Hrassa...
-Kitt : )

Author Reply: Hey there, Kitt!

*g* Yes, really. But, don't get too encouraged. ;P
I am glad you enjoyed the chapter. Intrigues and all.
Hopefully, I can get you to jump a few more time before the end of the story. Now you know why the princess needs a savvy governess to keep a closer eye on her behaviour.

Thank you very much for the review!

Manwe's blow-dryer *snerk!*

Oh, and I was also wondering about the fact that household guards had to be 'of certifiable Eldarin descent'. I take it you meant Eldar as in Exiles, not as a general term for elven descent? It seems a strange preference for Celeborn (who is Sindarin royalty) and a fairly impolitic decision for Galadriel (who rules a Sindarin/Galadhrim population). It seems a strange policy even for Gil-galad, who was raised by the Falathrim, and is representing himself as King of all elves.

On the other hand, the mention of Lady Elrovail's suspected...doings...with Hrassa was a really nice touch as a reminder of the different sexual mores of different elves. :D

Author Reply:
Ah, an afterthought! Love 'em. :)

Before quendi-kind left on the Great Journey to Aman, Orome had named the First-born, the Eldar, because they loved the stars.

The Eldar went west, out from the place of awakening, seeking to live in the light of the Two Trees. Those who stayed behind in the east were named the Avari, the Unwilling. So, those elves that embarked on the Journey are considered Eldar. Those that did not are considered Avari.

The Eldar consisted of three kindreds. It was a group within the Teleri who left the Journey, choosing to stay by the banks of the Anduin. These were called the Nandor. There are several definitions of that name, but one is "go back". Eventually, a group who became the Laegrim seperated from the Nandor and made it to Beleriand. Those that remained became the Silvan. (with some Avari mixed in most likely). The people who made it to Beleriand but stayed looking for Elu Thingol became the Sindar. Both groups along with Cirdan's folk missed the last transport west.

And thus, the rancor amongst the Sindarin peoples over what is Caliquendi and Moriquendi. Sindar are not Avari. But, the Silvan could be. The Exiles just think of all Umanyar as Unwilling.

Gilgalad is King of the Elves of the West - the Eldar. As opposed to elves of the east - the Avari. The Sindarin peoples are an alliance of both light and dark. I think that they embody, if not embrace, both aspects in a paradox the pious Exiles find hard to understand. So, Rhiss is subject to certain prejudices which he has to acknowledge.

Different cultural mores indeed. But, I like who Elrovail is, which is herself.

Thank very much for the question and comments!

Yay! A chapter! *dances around for a bit*

Nice change of view here; I really like you show us life in the back corridors, complete with intrigue! though I do wonder a bit at Rhiss' age: he seems more mature than I first pictured him as. How old is he again?

And you ended on a nice note of suspense - I can't wait for the next chapter!

Author Reply:
*G* Thank you too! For the happy dance!

Rhiss is a young kid, only a little bit older than Celebrian. As you say, pov has changed. We met him through Galadriel (and Celeborn's) eyes. He most certainly does not see himself being as young as they see him. Perhaps I used relativly grown-up language because this is his relative pov, but Rhiss'thoughts and actions are still those of a country boy away from home come to work in a big city company. Although, his situation is closer to an apprenticeship than to paid servitude. In my experience, most country boys, whatever their age, have a lot of horse sense in liu of street smarts.

I appreciate your enthusiasm very much! However, as you have seen I post rather slowly. But, I promise I will finish the story!

I wonder if Elvensmiths *are* clever enough to make a child-proof device; I’ve never known one that works.
Not allowed to interrogate! Hmph. I share Galadriel’s disappointment. I would really like to know why Hrassa left.
Ha, Secret Pass! No, I do not think it would be at all fun to move an army through Moria, even in its glory days. Sounds like an obstacle course, perhaps funny for the Dwarves to watch. But surely nothing beyond Celebrian’s enchantment is needed to keep the bowman…

Rhiss is wonderful; I hope he shows up again. Also Celeborn’s handling of the situation was fun, being strung with crude male jokes and Galadriel’s glee.
Thanks for the entertainment so far. As I said, I like how you make oh-so-aloft Elves approachable.
I am supposing the wisest thing to do is to start at the bottom of the page to read the rest of your stories?
-Kitt : )

Author Reply:
lol, there is one. A well-driven nail. Not much can be opened after that. ;)
Well, there were a few little clues earlier...
I really think that the Pass was - for most of time - known to none but the Elves of Lothlorien and Rivendell. After all, they are the only ones that would have need of it. *g* Hrassa does see more than susceptible.

Rhiss will. Galadriel does seem the sort that would enjoy both great and simple things.
I am very happy that you were entertained by this story so far. I do see elves as different from humans in many ways. However, not as ethereal beings per se. That aspect I would reserve for the Ainur.
If you are inclined to read more, I would say read in the order written, from the bottom up. As with this story, you will see how my writing style has changed and not changed for the better while I tried a few different things.

And please, if you read more, read entirely at your leisure for your own pleasure (hopefully you will enjoy some of it). For I am not swift at posting, and you will catch up very quickly.

Thank you so very much for reading this entire story and reviewing as often as you did. It was much appreciated and quite unexpected - and certainly a pleasure for me to read your comments!
