A "Just Because" Gift  by Grey Wonderer 6 Review(s)
SlightlyTookishReviewed Chapter: 1 on 3/19/2005
I read this story when it was originally posted for Marigold's Challenge, and it was just as wonderful as I remembered it! This is such a sweet story, and I love how Pippin finds a keepsake that brings back so many memories for Bilbo and Esmeralda :)

Author Reply: Why thank you so much! So rare that someone reads these and reviews them in two different places. I really do appreciate that! I am glad that you enjoyed it a second time.

Awwww...that was sweet. I LOVE Pippin! Merry is a good son to want to make his Mum so happy. Very Cute!

Author Reply: Thank you! So glad you enjoyed this one.

Random thoughts while reading:

Hurrah! Another G.W. story!

You didn't go for the obvious h/c--the broken leg, the stranded travellers--good for you!

For some reason I can hear Tom Paxton singing in the back of my head:
"It went zip when it moved, and bop when it stopped, and whir-r-r-r-r when it stood still!
"I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will."
(from "The Marvelous Toy")

Bilbo recognises the toy?

"He's spoiling you." "I know."

"Let's go get Frodo out of the books." (a hobbit after my own heart. Let the children ooh and ahh over the dusty, broken toys, wondering what they are and what they used to do, whilst I bury my nose in an old book.)

Another sort of conspiracy! (Getting Pippin to go to sleep)

"Her parents, her older sisters, and her brother..." Esmeralda?

Her father sounds like Paladin's father, to me... practical farmer, not a lot of sentiment.

I was right!

...and I had tears in my eyes, even before Esmeralda opened the present.

Lovely story!

Author Reply: I knew everyone would be expecting broken bones and so I thought I'd be a bit different.
I do think that Pippin would be the type to buy things others had tossed out even if he couldn't quite figure out what they were or get them to work again. I hadn't thought of that song but it certainly fits this story.
Glad to see that you were able to guess Esmeralda before I reached that part of it.
I am glad you enjoyed this one and I thank you for reading. (I am working on the other one and should have something more for you to Beta in that area, if you are still interested, by late weekend.)
Thanks for reviewing!

Reviewing the prologue just for fun! (They so seldom see reviews...)

Author Reply: I always look for your reviews on my prologue! You are, for the most part, the only one who reads them I think. LOL It keeps that part of the story from looking so left out and I thank you.

*sniff*, nice. And I was so sure it had to be Primula's ...

Author Reply: To tell you the truth, I did start to go that way but decided to go with Esmeralda instead. That way the gift could return to the owner. Thank you for reviewing and for reading!
