A Healer's Tale  by Lindelea 6 Review(s)

Excellent as always. Funny, though, at the beginning of the story I was most interested in a companion to "At the End of His Rope," but the story between Interludes is really good!

Author Reply: Well that's good to hear! Glad you're not a captive audience, but actually enjoying the between times.

Bless Ferdi for making the decision before even the healer has announced it's okay!

Love the decision on the cow and the wall, and the plaints Ferdi makes. As for Woodruff--she's just now fully appreciating the good of ent draughts.

Thanks for a chuckle with my feeling of longing to be there.

Author Reply: LOL. Ferdi would never feel like he was the Thain so long as Pippin's in the world. Not that he would want to, either! More like he'll take it on because he has to, for the sake of his beloved older cousin Reginard, and the rest of the Tooks, and the Tookland he nearly gave his life for.

You're welcome!

I can almost taste Ferdi's relief. Although he would make a good substitute Thain. But he would be miserable - at least until his blindness makes an office job more of a requirement.

So Woodruff, at least, isn't going to be totally blind-sided by what is about to happen. Good. I wouldn't want to have my faith in her infallibility tested!

Author Reply: Too true about Ferdi. He'd chafe at being stuck behind a desk, but at least he'd be decisive, where the decision-making, or rather the weight of responsibility, would drive Regi into the ground. However, if someone else will carry that weight, Regi is perfectly happy to provide support for all he's worth.

No, Woodruff suspects what's happened, but she doesn't quite believe what her senses are telling her... at least, not yet.

"And the times you take the sting from your words with a well-turned jest. Or bring a smile, even a cheer with the wisdom of your decisions! You build folk up; you do not cut them down."
That's our Pippin! I've always thought he would make a wonderful Thain!
And, as far as I can see he will wake up and he will be Thain for many years to follow. Thanks to the magical Ent draught, that seems to Woodruff like a miracle.

I'm looking forward to Pippin's awakening!

Author Reply: Yes, he does make a wonderful Thain, IMHO. "Best in 100 years" as I have characters saying... *g*

Poor Ferdi! He's so skittish of the idea of being Thain, even co-Thain with Regi, and of course until Faramir reaches his majority, that's what a Regency would amount to. It's very lucky we know he won't be called up to do that! I love his appraisal of how Pippin has run Tookland so far.

And Woodruff is still not quite wised-up to just how extensive a miracle cure Ent-draught is.

By the way, this week's challenge at lotr_fic_recs was for a story using flashbacks, and I recced this one. I think it's one of the most skilled use of flashbacks I've seen!

Author Reply: Thanks! I'm grinning ear to ear.

Woodruff simply cannot credit the overnight growth of new lung tissue and new nerves... seems that she's never encountered such a thing before. I don't think she ever really believed Pippin's account of growing taller after the Ent-draught in Fangorn Forest... she probably thinks he just comes by his height naturally, a throwback of some sort. After all, Bandobras came from the line of Thains. And Merry and Pippin are related, so... obviously, the account of growing taller during the Quest was so much hot air--or so Woodruff thought.

Sneaky Ferdi! He is determined not to be Thain.

I have to say I'm looking forward to Pippin's awakening, even though it will mean the story is about over. Just to see how he reacts to having that ring returned to him while he was in no state to refuse it will be worth a lot.:)

Good chapter. Glad to see an update.

Author Reply: LOL, Ferdi is sneaky indeed. Though he will take on the task if he has to, he'll leave it until there's no choice in the matter. (Good thing we know that Pippin survives to turn the seal of the Thain over to his son, just before heading to Gondor for the last time.)
