Celebrations  by Dot 9 Review(s)

Since Erestor is one of my favorite elves, I really enjoyed this! You made him seem so "normal", which is not the treatment he usually gets in fanfiction. I didn't know the "old grump" (as he's usually depicted: sour, sad, work-a-holic, staid, tense, repressed, cold, etc. etc. etc.) could dance! LOL! Glad he has Glorfindel to loosen him up.

Author Reply: Thanks so much for the review, Kestrel! It's a lovely surprise when a review comes in for an old story. I like to read about Erestor too so I really appreciate you letting me know that you enjoyed my depiction of him :-)

This was such a lovely story, Dot! I do love Erestor and Glorfindel's friendship. Erestor's pleasure at all the unaccustomed female attention was very sweet; I just can't imagine why all the ladies don't flock to him all on their own!

Author Reply: People are being very nice about this piece of nonsense! I'm really glad you liked it. I thought Erestor deserved a bit of a treat - and apparently Glorfindel thought so too! I know - what's wrong with the females of Imladris that they aren't normally hanging off him??! Thanks so much for the review :-)

Ahh! I love seeing Erestor and Glorfindel friendship. Erestor seems such a reserved and quiet elf (I wonder why?) and it was great seeing him drawn into enjoying himself in the company of maidens instead of sneaking off on his own to wait until his friends had finished their fun.

I like the idea of Glorfindel and Erestor sharing this special day.

Author Reply: Hmm. I suppose there's no reason the job of Chief Counsellor can't belong to someone charismatic or cheerful - poor Erestor always ends up portrayed as "reserved and quiet"! I just wanted the idea that his begetting day was something he'd tend to mark only with his closest friends. But Glorfindel had other ideas! I'm glad you liked their connection. Glorfindel hardly celebrates his original begetting day any more so I thought this would be something special that two old friends could share and that not many would know about. Thanks for the review! :-)

I loved this story, Dot! You had so many wonderful concepts in it, like the mention of the celebration of winter, and Elrond's invocation at the start of the spring celebration.

You do a fine job of portraying Glorfindel's and Erestor's friendship here. I'm glad the kindly, mischievous Glorfindel (yes, those two descriptions go well together) thought to make sure his reserved friend enjoyed the feast he had gone to such lengths to plan. And I really enjoyed your explanation of the tie between the two of them--it's such a lovely idea.

Oh, one more thing. This small paragraph captured Erestor's personality in just two sentences: "Erestor laughed lightly, bemused by his good fortune but willing to accept it. He even dared to hold her a little closer as the music swept over them." Well done!

Author Reply: Oh wow, what a wonderful review! I'm grinning happily to myself here!

I thought that if stars are so important to the elves that the shorter days of winter might be seen as a chance to mark this. I'm glad you liked that idea.

Glorfindel clearly didn't think much of the thought of Erestor waiting alone to celebrate just with his closest friends! So Erestor had some unexpected enjoyement and Gorfindel probably had fun too! The connection between them really appealed to me too and I thought it might be a special bond for them to share. Thank you so much for your thoughtful words and for even picking out your favourite parts, I really appreciate it :-)

Erestor has always been the quiet, responsible, rather staid elf "large and in charge" of Elrond's household. I love the stories that explore the friendship between Glorfindel the Golden and Erestor the Enigmatic! This was great - such a happy celebration and I am so glad Glorfindel didn't let Erestor sneak off with his wine to wait ALONE for him and Elrond to join him later. That's right, get him involved with a pretty maiden (or two or three...) and dancing and he'll thaw out quickly. Such a nice scene between Erestor and Glorfindel in the garden - what a nice thing for these two old friends to have in common. Erestor was smiling by the end - and so am I! Wonderful job, Dot!

Author Reply: "Glorfindel the Golden and Erestor the Enigmatic"?? LOL! I'm thrilled you liked it. It's just a piece of nonsense, really. Yes, Glorfindel decided to take things into his own hands. I doubt the maidens needed much persuading! And Erestor got some unexpected enjoyment. I had always intended it to be Erestor's begetting day but it occured to me that Glorfindel's re-birth would be an occasion he might mark, so why not make it the same day? Thanks for such a lovely review, Linda :-)

Dot,

This was great. I loved the feast in celebration of winter and how men found it odd that elves celebrated the coming of the cold months. But the men there seemed to get into the spirit of things pretty fast.

That sly Glorfindel. I loved his telling wink. I imagine that Erestor was shocked at his sudden popularity and figured out fairly quickly that someone with golden hair and a mischievous smile put the maidens up to asking him to dance. He must have been a very quiet elf, because I can't imagine that the maiden didn't find him 'cute'. They could see through the 'stern' part. I'm glad he had so many happy dance partners.

The ending was very nice. What a special bond to share between friends.

A delightful 'shorty'. I enjoyed it very much. As a matter of fact, I'm still smiling.

Karen

Author Reply: And now I'm smiling! I'm glad you liked it.

The men were added in at the last minute but I thought it would be a good way of showing the contrast between their way of looking at things and the elves' way.

Poor Erestor did take a little while to realise what was going on but there could really only be one person behind it all. Luckily he didn't get offended but chose to enjoy himself!!

Yes, I thought the connection between them would be something special for them to share. Thanks so much for a great review! :-)

I have to say I enjoyed the image of Erestor being approached by a series of maidens for a dance (Erestor deserves some tenderness and I rarely see him get it). And I liked the ending lines. A nice idea. I liked this story quite a bit. :)

Author Reply: Thank you, elliska! You're right, Erestor does deserve more tenderness than we usually see him get! The ending was just something that I thought would be a nice connection between them. Thanks for your kind words :-)

Oh Dot, this is absolutely lovely! Such an endearing glimpse at the friendship between Glorfindel and Ersstor. Thank you so much you have certainly made my day brighter, and I can think of no two Elves with whom I would rather share it!

jenolas

Author Reply: I'm so glad you like it! Something told me you might be particularly fond of these two elves ;-)

Have a wonderful birthday!

I like the idea that elves celebrate winter. That seems natural since night and stars are good times for them. As I recall, Glorfindel's rebirth rendered him more joyful and innocent than he had been, and it sounds like others recognize and are attracted to that.

So what would count as Glorfindel's birthday, I wonder? The first one or the day of his rebirth?

Author Reply: Wow, that was quick. The idea of elves celebrating winter belonged to a story I started last Christmas and never finished so I stole it for this!

I was thinking of Glorfindel's birthday as the day of his rebirth, which is why I didn't use 'begetting day'. I thought it would be a nice connection for them that most people around them might not know about. Thanks for the review :-)
