When One Door Closes...  by GamgeeFest 11 Review(s)

my though is "the passing of the torch"

Author Reply: Indeed. Primula and Drogo's part of the story may be over, but they know that Frodo will be taken care of.

Dreamflower recommended me to read this story and I'm glad I did. I think also that Iluvatar was always watching out for Frodo, taking one set of guardians but replacing them with another. (Not that He doesn't watch out for all His children, but you know what I mean). I love the thought that the reason Sam couldn't wait to be born was so that he could look out for his Frodo. I do believe that is specifically why Sam was created - to love Frodo. Have you read Tathar's "Bless Them"? That is so sweet and one of my favorite stories - Sam only a few months old and already trying to protect him.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: There's no doubt that there was something special about Frodo from the start. Knowing his fate, I believe he received more protection throughout his life than he would ever be aware of. Sam was his greatest protector, and I love the thought that he took up the torch, so to speak, when Drogo and Primula passed.

I will have to look up that story when I have a bit of extra time. Sounds like something I would enjoy. :)

Wow! This is so short, and yet so thought provoking! I always wondered what Sam's parents were thinking to give him such a name, but this makes sense. Excellent read! God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: I can't believe that Sam's parents were being cruel or ignorant to give him such a name. There had to be a valid reason for it and this is the one I came up with. I'm glad you approve. :) Thanks for reading!

Yes, the golden light of Samwise Gamgee. Lovely explanation for his name, and a glorious story over all.

Author Reply: I just couldn't imagine that Bell would name him half-wise to be cruel, like some parents today are when naming their children. I've wanted to explore the reason behind his name for awhile and this fic finally gave me the opportunity to do that. I'm glad you liked the explanation. :) Thanks for reading!

O... Brilliant! I love it, and how *wonderfully* described! The death of Primula and Drogo was delineated very nicely. (And what wonderful reasoning for giving Sam his name! I must admit, I do recall wondering once or twice why his parents would name him 'Half-wise') Great job!

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I wanted to connect Primula and Drogo to Sam somehow, and this was the way to do it. I believe Frodo's parents would be worried about him, but knowing that he will be looked out for helped them to accept their fate.

I too have often wondered what kind of parents could name their child half-wise. This seemed like a good explanation for it.

Thank you for reading and for the lovely review. :)

Brilliant, I must say, that Frodo's parents' final thought was on hoping that their son would be well-protected. Almost at the same time, Samwise Gamgee is born. Oh, how could any of them have any idea?

Author Reply: Thank you, kind stranger! Everyone thinks of their loved ones in their final moments, and being parents of such a young child, they would worry about his welfare. It was divine intervention that brought Sam into the world where he would best be able to care for Frodo. I've explored before that Sam was able to heal Frodo in regards to his parents' deaths, and this is one small part of the reason why that is so.

Thanks for reading!

This is incredible. I never put together that Sam was born around the time Frodo's parents died. It's a beautiful thought that he was their replacement in Frodo's life. Just beautiful. Thank you for this.

Author Reply: I noticed almost immediately when looking at the family trees that Primula and Drogo died the same year Sam was born. I do not believe this was a coincidence. Tolkien never tells us the date of their death, but I like to think it was the same day as Sam's birth, and in that way, Frodo was never left without protection or looking after, even if Frodo wasn't aware of it at the time.

Thanks for reading!

What a lovely story! There aren't many stories about the death of Frodo's parents that make me feel warm and good, but you've somehow managed to write one. Thank you.

Author Reply: You're most welcome! So much anguish and despair came out of their deaths; it's nice to see that there was good in it too. Sam accepted the task of protecting Frodo even before he was born: it was simply meant to be. Thanks for reading!

I have never read anything like this and though my vote for "A Night To Forget" didn't win, I am very glad to have lost. This is so interesting. I had thought that Bilbo might be the answer to their prayers, but I do love that it was Sam. That fits so much better. Sam was always Frodo's protector. A lovely idea.

Author Reply: I was a bit nervous about this one. I've never written anything like this before, and like you, I'm glad it won the vote or I'd probably have waited to post it till the very last.

I'm not sure where exactly I got the idea for this fic. I have a "to write" list of fics, some are just titles, some are just summaries, some are both, and some even have notes. This one was just a title, and for the longest time I had no clue what it was supposed to be about. Then one day, out of the blue, it came to me.

For one brief, split second after Primula and Drogo's deaths and before the birth of Samwise, their spirits saw each other in passing. The ending of their light and beginning of Sam's was a passing of the baton. Even though Frodo couldn't know it at the time, he was never left without protection or looking after. Bilbo played the part for awhile, but it was Sam who would see Frodo to the ends of the earth and back.

Thanks for the review. I have "A Night to Forget" ready to go, as soon as I get time to post it. Maybe in a month or so. :)

Oh my, GamgeeFest, what a beautiful Easter gift! So perfect and true--you chose very well in giving us *this* story. Don't suppose you'll see this f.b. for a week or so, but good luck and God bless!

Author Reply: Thank you! I wasn't too sure about this one, it's not your traditional story. I was going to shelve it, but I'm glad it won the vote. I probably would have put it off till the last otherwise. And it is quite fitting for Easter, now that I take a look at it. :) Good luck to you also, in all that you do!
