How to be a Gardener  by Baggins Babe 6 Review(s)

This story was so adorably fluffy. I smiled the whole time I read it! I love the image of Sam in that giant floppy hat...

"Beggin' your pardon, Frodo, but it's this wretched thing!." He pointed with his toe towards the offending plant.

Frodo lost his battle and howled. "Oh, your face! Makes me really glad I'm not a weed. I wouldn't want to arouse your ire. If you make many more faces like that you'll frighten the thing to death!"

"Well, I'm glad I'm causing you amusement, but this is not funny." Sam scowled at the dandelion, which was quite shameless in its behaviour.

"No.......no, of course it isn't," spluttered Frodo, struggling to compose himself and look properly scandalised.

Frodo looked on fondly as Sam lifted the plant gently with a trowel and put it in a pot with some soft soil. Sam was always so tender with fragile plants and tiny seedlings, as he was with babies, new-born calves and lambs, as he had always been with Frodo himself. Even in the midst of delirium and nightmare, Sam had been there, stroking his brow, tending his wounds, taking care. Frodo found himself blinking back sudden tears as he thought of what Sam meant to him.

"I want to come out and play in the dirt today!"

Some people might wish for riches and power, but for Samwise Gamgee, master gardener, Mayor of Michel Delving, friend of kings, a day spent in a Shire garden with his beloved master was the best thing he could think of.

"Remember this tree, Frodo?" Frodo nodded, smiling at the memory.

"I was up there, on that branch, reading a book the first day you came to Bag End with your father. He lifted you up to me and I read stories to you until you fell asleep. It has always been my favourite."

Oh, such innocent joy and love! I think Gandalf and Bilbo were just a little off when they called Frodo the best hobbit in the Shire - FrodoandSam is the best.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Frodo and Sam's banter had me howling! It's really late here and I almost woke the other occupants of my home with my barely suppressed giggling. And I love this:

"Pippin's eyebrows were doing complicated gymnastics..."

I have no idea why, but it just sounds so funny! Excellent! I'm going to go read what all this is based on! God bless,
Galadriel

I do so love your "Reunion" Universe!
Your hobbits are so hobbity, and delightfully in character. The sad memories can be faced solemnly, but not soppily, and a tribute is paid to the cost of the Quest, while it's clear that healing has happened, and that truly, Frodo can live and enjoy his beloved Shire.
This was quite nice--I loved the moment when Frodo felt the "heart" of the tree! And the teasing is so fun--I'd love to see Frodo in that hat myself!

Author Reply: I thought you would like this one! I must say I love writing these and giving Frodo the happy ending he so deserves.

Yes, the thought of him in that hat is quite beguiling!

Author Reply: So glad you liked it - have you read the companion piece, 'A Convivial Evening'? That follows on, with lots more happy hobbits.

Don't worry, there are lots more stories in this universe. :-))

Your stories just warm my heart!

"It was worth it, Sam. It was worth what we went through, to have saved all this." He gazed at the fields below, stretching as far as the eye could see, a patchwork quilt joined by lanes and hedges, all slumbering in the summer heat under a brilliant blue sky. In the distance a lark soared into the blue, and sang for the joy of living.

*happy sigh* What a wonderful relationship between Sam and Frodo. It was worth everything they went through, to have such a joyous happily-ever-after.

Author Reply: I'm a hopeless sucker for a happy ending, and I think Frodo deserves a little fun. I just love seeing the hobbits having a good time. :-)) I thought you would like it.
