Reviewing "Protocol of Princes" for MEFA brought me here but I lingered to read all the vignette/drabbles here and I am so glad! Everyone more charming than the next. You master a range of characters extremely well and give each one his own voice and often ironic moment. Author Reply: Hi there - Thank you! The nice thing about catering to people's birthday wishes is that it gives one an excuse to play around with characters that one doesn't normally have the courage or inspiration to deal with... :-) cheers, Maya

!! Forgive me, I got the 'chapters' mixed. I must have gone back & pasted to the wrong one. My comment: "I like the idea of a meeting between these two & I'm sure Ecthelion sent Denethor on numerous diplomatic journies, as Denethor had to have done with Boromir." was meant for 'Heirlooms'. Sorry :) Author Reply: Oops- I should have understood that. Now that you explain it, it seems obvious, and perfectly natural when you're reviewing multiple things on the same page! I agree that Ecthelion would have used Denethor as an ambassador-at-large. What I was imagining though, is that this incident shappened in Gondor, while Thengel was in service there: we do know he left his father, Fengel's court and distinguished himself in the Steward's service (based on the Appendices, again). It's also during this tiem that he met Morwen, his Gondorian wife. What can I say? I'm a canon geek :-) cheers, Maya

1) A bit cocky there, Eomer. Perhaps he reminds Faramir a bit of his brother? These two must have had fun together. 2) Clever subject matter. This may have been passed on eventually to Sam's little ones. 3) Somehow I can't see Gimli wrapping his head around the music of Arda. I can imagine the tale seeming too whimsical for him. Yet, he respects it & for that he is respected in return. 4) I had thought all in Gondor said the 'prayer', but perhaps the only reason Faramir's men participated was due to Faramir himself. Certainly Denethor insisted his sons be faithful to the ritual. Maybe it wasn't as widely known among the common folk, as you've hinted here. 5) I love the image of Denethor here - a young cheeky pup, rather than a brooding pessimist. I can see a bit of each his sons here. Thengel must have been amused. 6) Perhaps Dirhael was a bit wary of his daughter taking up with a man with such a destiny. Were these their actual names, or did you take liberties here? Just curious. I like the idea of a meeting between these two & I'm sure Ecthelion sent Denethor on numerous diplomatic journies, as Denethor had to have done with Boromir. 7) I can see that night in my mind's eye reading this - Boromir never backing down from a challenge, carousing with his men no matter his title. The owner of the Eagle's Rest may have dreaded the heir's return, but I'll bet Boromir paid and then some for every ounce of damage. 8) They had to have become very close over the years, their personalities are so similar, yet different enough to be more than amiable. The gift from Thranduil hints that Faramir may have visited Eryn Lasgalen once. I hope he at least got to see one elven realm. Author Reply: Hi, Wow- I appreciate your taking the time to comment on each piece. To respond to some of your points: 4. I didn't actually mean to imply that the prayer wasn't generally known. To the young soldier, it was a bit of a non sequitur when Hirluin continued his train of thought aloud. As for example, it might be to a modern person to come up to someone and hear something like, "Hallowed be Thy name", out of any obvious context. 6. The names are all out of the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the Appendices. I'm not sure I understand your reference to Ecthelion and Denethor in your comment, though... 7. I'm not thrilled with this piece, it doesn't come off exactly the way I wanted. Of course Boromir would have made sure the innkeeper was recompensed. 8. I'm pretty sure Faramir got to see Rivendell at the very least, actually. He was the Steward of the reunited Kingdom after all, and he had a very long life... I imagine he visited Arnor several times, and can't see him passing up the chance to visit Elrond's library :-) Thanks again for commenting! cheers, Maya
