The Tenth Walker  by Lindelea 6 Review(s)

I love the fact that you had Asfaloth stand up for Bill against the other Elf-horses. I find it hard to believe that he would do otherwise, since Glorfindel chose him as a steed...but some other stories I've read which tell the story from Bill's point of view portray Asfaloth as being vain and a bit of a snob. Mind you, Tolkien seems to have dropped a hint or two here and there which suggests that Elves can sometimes be a bit snobbish toward members of the other races as well...but Glorfindel doesn't appear to be like that, so I don't think he would be pleased with a horse that behaved that way.

Author Reply: I have read at least one story where Asfaloth was snobbish, and it was a little funny - and not unbelievable, considering the way horses establish a pecking order amongst themselves, but I have also seen larger beasts acting protective, and so I chose to see Asfaloth as more noble than petty. Glad to hear you agree!

Belated thanks for your comment.

Ah - some well-earned rest at last. You make me wonder how Merrylegs has fared among these elf-horses but it seems like Bill will have at least three friends.

Author Reply: Merrylegs is a... a character, that's the best way to put it. He's a plucky little fellow, and doesn't put up with much guff.

Thanks!

So finally Bill has a place to rest, and is well-treated -- about the best a pony could be treated, except that there's a serious lack of news and hobbits around the stable....

I seem to have completely missed who Merrylegs must be (duh!). [No, you don't have to explain: I got it *this* reading.]

Author Reply: Yes, a serious lack. Someone ought to remedy that. *g*

Thanks!

How delightful to see a new chapter of this! At last Bill is getting what he deserves: cool sunlight, green grass, clean water, and helpful attention!

I loved Asfaloth coming to his defense from those other haughty horses, and it looks as though he's found a friend in this new mare, and in Merrylegs...

Author Reply: I would figure Asfaloth as being pretty high in the pecking order, if not at the top, and so I think Bill will fare well, now that the great horse has let his views be known.

Ah, it is so nice to contemplate Bill's time in Rivendell, although I, like JRRT, anticipate that there won't be all that much to say about it, once certain events are resolved. Peace and plenty don't make for gripping chapters, sad to say.

Thanks!

I swish my tail, not to fend off midges, but from the sheer pleasure of feeling the well-combed length of it

Ahhhh, what a pleasurable awakening. I'm so happy for Bill. He indeed experienced his own "many meetings", and Asfaloth was there to help him gain acceptance.

Author Reply: Yes, it was amusing to find that "Many meetings" fit Bill's first (wakeful) day in Rivendell as well.

Thanks!

Love Asfaloth's championship of our Bill, and the friendship offered by Bilbo's pony and the mare. She has certainly made the understatement for the day!

Good to hear from you, and to see this story updated, too!

Author Reply: She's a great one for understatement, I find.

Looking forward to seeing you!

(and, thanks!)
