Wasn't that what Merry said as well, when he regained consciousness from the Black Breath?

😂

What a wonderful little story! It had everything I love most in a fic: heroism, friendship, adventure, tension and h/c, and even a comeuppance for that dratted Bill Ferny... I would imagine he'll not be very happy with the justice the Rangers will mete out! The battle scene was exceedingly well done, and Strider's waking up made me melt... his line upon waking was perfect.

I'm so glad you rec'd it to me, because I may not have found it otherwise.

Author Reply: Thanks!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I sometimes feel funny rec'ing my own stuff, but when someone expresses a particular wish, and I know I've written something similar, then I think "Well, I'd want them to rec one of theirs to me if they thought I might like it!"

This was one of many stories I'd likely never have written at all without Marigold's lovely prompts! She was responsible for many of my best stories!

And I am so glad you liked his waking up line! I thought if his first sight was Merry's and Pippin's faces, that just might be what came out! *grin*

Love this story~ I love the action the hobbits had with the ruffians, love that there is some Aragorn healing in here and love how Merry and Pippin rode forth to be with Aragorn while he recovers. I like the idea of their friendship being so strong despite the distance. And it was nice to have character appearances by everyone involved in the War of the Ring.
Nice job! :)

Author Reply: Well, the elements for the story really called for action, and I had to deliver. This is very far off my usual beaten track, but I'm glad you liked it. Aragorn gets to be the healer all the time; I just thought it was time he got a bit of TLC. And of course, all the friends *had* to be there! (Except poor Sam--but even if it was AU, I couldn't see him riding off and leaving Rosie so close to her due date.)

Hello! I wanted to review this on the Challenge site but for some reason it wouldn't let me, I'm not sure weather it was my computer or the site, probably my computer.

Anyway! This was great! I liked seeing a bit of action there when the hobbits were waylaid by Ruffians, they handled it well even if the Elves did need to make sure things ended on well for them. I'm sure Sam would have been a bit upset that he wasn't able to go to his friend's side, but no one would fault him for not leaving his wife.

Poor Arwen! How terrible to have to sit and wait like that not knowing what the out come might be. I'm sure it was a relief when her brothers finally arrived! I'm glad they were able to help! It was just like Strider/Aragorn/Estel/King Elessar to have got wounded trying to help others, what a great guy!

I was so happy when he woke up though, it was a lovely little reunion and I'm sure it did a lot of those there that he joked there are the beginning. It was a wonderful story, thank you!

Author Reply: So glad to hear from you Hai, on this story, and I'm so glad you liked it. This was fun to write, and a lot more action oriented than most of my stories, and a bit different from my usual universe as well, so I was happy that people seemed to accept it.

Yes, Merry and Pippin were handling things quite well, until that one Ruffian threatened Freddy; the Elves came just in the nick of time. Sam was upset that he could not go, but I just could not picture him leaving an expectant Rose even for that--and of course, no one faulted him, but he felt bad about it anyway.

Yes, it must have been difficult, especially the waiting until they could arrive!

I knew that if he got hurt in the earthquake it would have to be because he was being heroic, naturally!

Everyone loved his little jest at the beginning where he quoted Merry. I expect that they were all so relieved to hear it, LOL!

And thank *you* for the lovely review, and for going to the trouble of finding it here when you couldn't review at the Challenge site. That's above and beyond the call of duty, and I really appreciate it.

WONDERFUL WONDERFUL Dreamflower! WOW! I'm just blown away! The hobbit/ruffian battle (and that *$%&#$*# Bill!)... our hobbits can certainly fight, can't they? I liked how they really don't like fighting, and that it made them ill. Probably very true to hobbit form. :)

This was just awesome. You kept strong focus on Mer and Pip, and it kept the story moving quite well. You had all major characters, yet it was truly Merry and Pippin's story. You're a gifted writer, DF. Keep up the good work. :)

Author Reply: Thanks! I'm blown away by your enthusiasm!! Especially since this is a lot different than my usual story.

I figured that as long as Marigold wanted a serious sword-fight, I'd go whole hog. But no, I don't imagine that hobbits ever can get used to killing people. I'm sure they would have a reaction to it.

Thanks for noticing that I tried to keep it Merry and Pippin. Even with the rest of the Fellowship and some of the others there, I wanted the focus to be hobbity.

Well, I just looked it up to be sure! Aragorn spoke exactly the same words as Merry, when the king awakened him from the Black Breath! That should be indeed a sign that Aragorn will recover!

I'm very impressed with the skills of Merry and Pippin in sword fighting. Still, they remain hobbits - and that's what I like. They only fight, when there is no other way. It can clearly be seen from their reactions.

Author Reply: Yes, he did, *grin*. I thought that seeing the hobbits right away, standing there all worried, it would be his easiest and best way to reassure them that he would, indeed, be all right.

That is something that I make clear when one of them has been forced to kill someone--at least someone who is not an orc or troll--it literally makes them sick. Merry has a bit more control, and can usually fight it off, but Pippin tends to be more emotional, and usually ends up losing it. But I would think that any time a hobbit had to kill a *person* it *would* make them sick, even when it was in self-defense. Hobbits simply are not *meant* to have to kill, and it takes a toll when they must. But these two have been trained to defend themselves and others, and will do so when pushed--using all the skills they learned from Boromir and others in the Fellowship.

Aragorn WOULD say such a thing, the sly dog! Lovely tale.

Author Reply: Well, obviously *I* thought he would. *grin* It was clearly the easiest way to let everyone know he was back, wasn't it?

I'm glad you liked it. Very different from my usual fare, thanks to Marigold.

This may be AU concerning your other fics, but I don't see why it shouldn't fit into canon. That Tolkien didn't mention any travels of Hobbits between Shire and Gondor other than the Quest, Sams visit and the last journey of Merry and Pippin doesn't necessary mean there were none. And they had some decades, that was enough time after all. And I think an earthquake not so unlikely. Orodruin was a volcano after all and not that far from Minas Tirith. Much space for fics like this one, if you ask me.

Anyway, I loved this. It was nice to see Merry and Pippin as seasoned warriors again. The ruffians had definitely not expected this. And even if this ficlet doesn't belong to your other stories, it is another proof they should not only toss the ruffians and other criminals out of the Shire. I was truly glad the Elves arrived in time to save Freddy!

It must have been a hard time for all of them - Sam remaining in the Shire and worrying about Rosie *and* Strider and the others on the desperate way to Gondor. (Btw, how the Hobbits survived on a diet only of Lembas is beyond me ;-))

It was very nice they were all there when Aragorn awakened. It must have been quite comforting for him to see nearly all his friends there.

Author Reply: Well, I suppose it could fit into canon at a stretch, but I think anything this major would have warranted a mention in the Tale of Years. And it's definitely AU for my usual Shire story.

Yes, I have to say, I was kind of glad for a chance to show Merry's and Pippin's abilities--especially Merry's, as I've had a couple of stories that showed *Pip* defending himself, but never really had the right circumstances to show Merry doing so. I knew the Elves would arrive in just the nick of time, too!

I am sure this would have been really hard on them. They all loved Aragorn dearly, not just as King, but as their dear Strider. It would have hit them hard to have something like that happen to him.

Well, Frodo and Sam survived on lembas crumbs all the way through Mordor, so it's definitely possible. But as Sam pointed out in the "Stewed Rabbit" chapter, it doesn't put much in the belly.

I am sure that he did feel comforted and loved to see all of them there for him.

Just in case you had forgotten.
