Lesser Ring  by Larner 5 Review(s)

They did make Benai's new status quite clear. Good. And I'm glad even the Haradrim obviously accept him as guard to the Queen.

It was nice how they told the tale of the Quest together. And Pippin was very brave, to show his scars in front of so many people.
But Sherfiramun ... he does not only not believe anything, he doesn't *want* to believe it, I suppose. By now I'm quite suspicious of him. He has very bad manners, to insult all the guests of the Farozi, most of all Pippin, so publicly. And to say You are no warrior for all you carry a sword. ... *shakes head*. Maybe he needs to sparr with Pippin himself to learn better, and I would'nt be surprised if it were in earnest. Or Eowyn should give him a good thrashing with her own sword. Preferably both. I don't trust him an inch more than I can throw him, and that is not very far. He has not even answered the question of the Farozi if he is satisfied. *looks even more suspicious* I hope the Farozi and, maybe even more important, the guests from the North have an eye on him.

In all this solemnity some of the remarks were funny: Pippin's explanation of the one not so honourable scar and Aragorn's about lying Hobbits and mushrooms *grins*

Author Reply: Sherfiramun will shortly see the extent of Pippin's abilities; and you are right, the man is not to be trusted. Remember how he served in the forces of Harad, and to which services he'd been assigned.

As for the not-so-honorable scar and Hobbits and mushrooms--well, I felt a bit of real Hobbit life needed to be interjected here. After all, farm raids and mushrooms are a big part of what is expected of Hobbits!

There was so much in this chapter I hardly know where to start ! I loved the description of Benai looking so magnificent and the way they all told part of the Ring story.
I don't think from what Tolkien says, that Pippin would be scarred by the orc whips( maybe on the legs only) as he was wearing several layers of clothing and said nothing when the others turned up,but that is a matter of interpreatation.
I felt realy angry on his behalf that he was douted and had to show his scars and liked the way Aragorn reacted.
I would love to read a story from you about Aragorn saving Faramir and the hobbits as I feel you would do that so beautifully,
I admire the way you weave your diferent stories together.
Thank you for answering my questions, I am learning a lot from you !

Author Reply: Glad you enjoy the glimpse of Benai in his finery. Decided that to move him immediately from new-bought slave to guard status in such exotic duds would impress all.

I've already described all four hobbits as being physically as well as emotionally scarred by their experiences, but agree I ramped up the seriousness of the wounds a bit. But a whip weal can be pretty blamed nasty, while the scars from having been bound would probably have been visible for a time, at least.

Aragorn would want to protect his own from indignity, I'm certain; yet would honor the decision to bare the scars.

Thanks for appreciating how my stories try to remain consistent.

As for answering questions--that's just natural.

I enjoyed this chapter in many different ways. One just to see all of the interweaving of what it took to bring down Sauron - all of them had parts of the story to tell. They couldn't have done it without each other and I know that of course, but it was just interesting to have them all in one place and see it told like that.

I actually liked having the man, Sherfiramun, in the story. Though I don't like what he did, but having him there makes it more realistic. If you had fought for the other side in a war, would you just believe what the 'enemy' said to you? He'd been lied to for years so of course he wouldn't just believe them and I imagine that many of the other Haradic people don't either, but they just don't say it. But poor Pippin, to have to show of his scars to prove it to him, was heartbreaking because you just know how hard that is for him. I almost thought Aragorn wasn't going to 'let' him do it, but of course Pippin was right, it did need to be done.

Well done as usual!

Author Reply: Sherfiramun remains in the story, and will become more of a foil as it unwinds. But, you are right--he'd been lied to for years and needs to realize just how much this is true, and that his preconceptions are open to question.

So glad you find it well done. Gives me hope I'll do better in my own story.

I wanted to kick Sherfiramun all the way back to Gondor! I sense a confrontation coming. Great re-telling and thanks for getting Ruvemir into the act. I was very proud of Pippin but I couldn't have done what he did, but then deplomacy on that level is not my strong point.

Author Reply: Oh, yes, there is a confrontation coming, and the return of someone we've seen before.

Ruvemir needs to tell his part of the tale, too; and glad you found his additions desirable. Am glad this small sculptor crept out of the empty space under my bed the night he did, as I find I rather admire him.

Well, well; Shefiramun is a sore loser, and a loudmouth to boot!

Pippin's response and anger were well done, though I think I'd have liked it even more if he'd sparred with him and won. *sigh* Oh, well, I don't suppose that would have been very polite at the Farozi's dinner.

And even though his doubt was the catalyst for the revelations that needed to be made, I still hope the Farozi gives him what for later on, for having the bad manners to doubt the word of his guests!

Author Reply: Oh, Sherfiramun is about to find himself rather crowded with repercussions from tonight's outburst, not to mention what else he might be party to. I rather think the King doesn't trust him any more.
