If I had a Hammer  by Grey Wonderer 6 Review(s)

You have me giggling. With Pippin holding (and most likely alternately dropping it and letting go as he tries to pound) I suspect that Pippin and Sam would indeed do well to have a helmet on hand. It would be right useful!

Author Reply: Someone really should send for the saftey inspector for this job site. LOL Thanks for reading and I am very glad that you giggled.

Poor little Pippin! Yeah, that Merry indeed is being insufferable right now. He's needing a swift...well, we'll wait on that bit. I know Sam is coming to the rescue! Good old Sam. And you are writing him excellently!

Author Reply: Wow, thanks for the lovely words about Sam. You do know how I worry. In fact over on LJ I have Gamgeefest looking for non-Sam-like behavior because I am so paranoid about him. Glad you like this and thank you for reviewing over here. You are a darling.

"Piss off, Merry"???? I'm cracking up! Your characterization is always a delight!!

Author Reply: Thank you. That line got this little story its PG rating. I like a grumpy Frodo from time to time. Besides, Merry was driving him crazy. LOL

LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 1 on 9/4/2005
“I doubt that Frodo or I will ever know because you don’t seem to be willing to let us see it,” Merry pointed out.
Logical Merry, and not quite old enough yet to have the same compassion Frodo shows.

In fact, his cousin Berilac Brandybuck had told him that if your thumbnail did fall off that it hardly ever grew back.
How mean! But typical of youth, I'm afraid... My brothers used to do just the same sort of thing.

Ai! Merry needs to do something about that problem he has with self-confidence!

“Frodo, Pippin is never going to be a carpenter,” Merry said. “He is going to be the sort of hobbit who hires folks like Tobias Tunnely to build things for him.”
Merry is so very... practical here that one could cheerfully throttle him.

Well... I'm certainly glad Pippin didn't swallow any of the nails. (Of course, such a thing might well be lethal, in his day and age.)

That rabbit of Pippin's? Is this a story I missed?

Ummm... I hate to say this, seeing what a fine hobbit Merry turned out to be and all, but I am really looking forward to seeing him get his comeuppance.

My guess would be that Pippin is building a wheelbarrow. Am I right? His wheelbarrow sounds a bit like my first attempt to build bookshelves.

Hah. I'm right!

‘No,” Pippin said. “I nailed his sleeve to a board, dropped another board on one of his feet, accidentally spilt some of that grease that you use on wheels down the front of his shirt, and sawed a small table in half.” Pippin cleared his throat. “I think he was doing a good job of being patient with me until I dropped the hammer on his head and then he had a very hard time keeping his temper. That’s when he said that I should work on my project by myself for a week. He said that he would come by and see how I was managing after that.” Pippin looked at Sam and continued. “Do they make some sort of foot guard that fits on your head? Maybe like a helmet?”
You have me laughing out loud. I'm sure you expected that. Well, you were right.

“I can tell that all right,” Sam agreed.
Diplomatic Sam!

And you have me laughing at the end!

Definitely looking forward to more.

Author Reply: I was also told that my thumbnail would fall off and never come back by a friend when I was a child. LOL That one must ring true with lots of people.

This Merry knows too much for his own good. One of those folks that doesn't have too much trouble doing anything he tries and can't see why others have a problem or two. You are right though, he is practical.

The bit with the nails in the mouth was Sam being practical. Difference is Sam was also diplomatic. I think this quaility is overlooked in Sam at times. He was very diplomatic and that helped make him an excellent Mayor.

You had an easier time guessing this one than Sam did and he was looking right at it! LOL

So glad you got a laugh or two. I am posting the second chapter later tonight and the Gaffer will have a thing or two to say.

Oh the rabbit that belongs to Pippin is in several stories but the incident that Merry is referring too was in a challenge story called, "Errol" that is one of the "Brandybuck and Took" stories. Linkhttp://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterview.asp?sid=2364&cid=14435 if you are interested.
Thanks for reading and for letting me know which parts you enjoyed.

Especially, I would think, by Mister Tunnely. And it would be rather pleasant to see Merry's overwheening self-confidence take a bit of a knock. He's old enough to learn that arrogance isn't that attractive a quality!

I don't know how you manage to keep producing so many absolutely brilliant Merry/Pippin stories. It's a true talent!

Author Reply: Thank you! I seem to think in Merry and Pippin for some reason, Brilliant? I don't know about that one. I do thank you though and I am glad you are enjoying this one. Merry and Mister Tunnely both need a few lessons in this case.

Hmmm, this is a fascinating puzzle. There's a tween Frodo carpentry story hidden in this Pippin story as well. I suspect, though, that in the way of most good authors you will keep all of us poor readers wondering about it for some time yet. LOL! That's ok, I can wait, and I love your hobbit stories.

Poor Pippin and poor Tunnely. I was right. Pippin and carpentry is just asking for trouble. But hopefully, my favorite young Took will prove everyone wrong before all this is over and make this project into something he can be proud of.

PS. Before you even described the project in detail, when Sam just caught a glimpse of a piece of wood with two poles sticking out of one end, I immediately guessed that it was a wheelbarrel. And personally, I think three wheels, when properly replied, is a good idea!

Author Reply: Before this is over you just might get a tale about Frodo's carpentry. Look for more carpentry sometime this evening as I will post a second chapter tonight. I'm glad you could guess what Pippin was trying to build. Sam had a bit of trouble guessing and he wa looking at it! LOL More about Pippin's idea for three wheels later in this story.
