think of it as an independent study course with next door profs. Author Reply: Not that such a thought would comfort the Gaffer very much, of course. ;)

“Do you think, if he were to tell me some Elvish while I’m learning him to cook, that’d be all right?” Love it! Anything with their early friendship is fun and this is cute. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Sam knows how to get his way when he puts his mind to it. After all, Gaffer can't forbid Sam from talking to Frodo, and if elves and Elvish just happen to come up... :) I'm glad you enjoyed this! If you like early frienDship fics, you might want to check out "Looking After" and "Story of a Garden" in my Keepsakes series. Thanks for reading! :)

Mmmm...I'm hungry now! :) Those truffles sound sooo good! I love recipe fics, and this is one of the best I've read. Sam is so sweet! I love seeing Bilbo as teacher, Frodo trying to cook (poor dear, I know how *that* goes), and Sam as supporter and helper. And I could just hug the Gaffer! That last line is great! God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: They do sound good, don't they? If I cooked, and had the proper pots to cook these with, I might attempt making them! I would, of course, *buy* the ginger sugar. ;) I'm actually a lot like Frodo - I can cook fine when there's someone else there and helping me, but on my own, I'm a wreck. Sam is just as sweet as they come. It's no wonder he so often gets what he wants, more so than his brothers and sisters at any rate. Gaffer must have a tough time of it telling his son 'no' when he has to. Thanks for reading!

“Do you think, if he were to tell me some Elvish while I’m learning him to cook, that’d be all right?” Sam asked hopefully Now, that I call a clever hobbit! Sam knows exactly what to say to make Old Hamfast falter. I like your Gaffer and the way he talks. “That’d be ‘tween 'ee and him” - this one took me some time to figure it out :) And, of course, Frodo is just wonderful! Author Reply: Sam's smarter than he gives himself credit for. I'm sure he'll even find a way to continue with his lessons during the slower parts of the seasons. The Gaffer is more or less my own dad, with his talk coming from Tolkien and other fanfic writers. And Frodo - Sam will make a cook of him yet. :)

Sweet! ^_^ I can't even begin to tell you how fangirly this has made me. Young Frodo, cooking Frodo, injured Frodo, feeling-useless Frodo... You like writing about cooking, it seems. ^_- I <3 this! And Frodo! And Sam! And good-hearted Bilbo and Gaffer... I'm not being very articulate today, am I? Lol. It was teriffic. ^_- Author Reply: Writing about cooking, yes. Actually cooking, no. lol What can I say, they're hobbits, they have to cook. ;) LOL, I didn't even consider the fangirl factor when I wrote this. I guess I should have posted a warning at the beginning.

What a delightful (and delicious) story! Samwise's life is certainly never dull now that Bilbo is his tutor, and Frodo is his friend. “Do you think, if he were to tell me some Elvish while I’m learning him to cook, that’d be all right?” Sam asked hopefully and turned his big brown eyes on his father, pouting ever so slightly, which he was really too old to do anymore, but it still worked. Gaffer sighed, defeated. “That’d be ‘tween 'ee and him,” he grumbled and was rewarded with another beaming smile. “Thank you, Gaffer!” Sam said and hugged his father’s waist tightly, preventing the older hobbit from walking for a moment. They reached the gate to Number Three, Bagshot Row and Hamfast smiled fondly down at his youngest son, chuckling softly. Spoiled to the core Sam was, and all the sweeter for it. Such a sweet ending! :D Author Reply: Oh, growing up with 5 siblings, Sam's life was never dull, but Frodo and Bilbo certainly do add to the fun! I'm sure he has a plentitude of amusing and crazy stories about his employers, but a good servant never talks. ;)

Dear Eru, they get to me even when I'm reading fics! I have an essay to write that I'm procrastinating on, and then Bilbo goes and gives Sam and essay, reminding me of what I should be doing. Grr... Oh, well. Anyway, this was a great fic. And those truffles sound good. I like strawberries. As always, you did a wonderful job with Sam and Frodo and the like. ... See, you even have me talking like them! Well, I suppose I ought to go write my essay now, so I'll read the rest of it sometime later. Author Reply: LOL, there's no escaping those essays! Except for Sam, though he would rather continue with his lessons if he could. Frodo will likely find some way to continue Sam's lessons while Sam's teaching him how to cook. :D

What a wonderfully sweet story. (Pun intended!) My mouth is watering while my diabetic sugar reading is going sky high! Shame. Author Reply: LOL, well at least you can live vicariously through the hobbits. Thanks for reading! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

I loved this and it made me very hungry! LOL Sam was so sweet in this and I am in the mood for all that I can read with the Gaffer in it. I'm starting to get attached to that hobbit! Loved the last line: Spoiled to the core Sam was, and all the sweeter for it. Sam is certainly sweet! Lovely story to come home to after work. Made me smile! Author Reply: I was craving strawberries writing this! I'm almost as bad with strawberries as Frodo is with mushrooms! Sam is always sweet, and the Gaffer is sweet in his own way. Sure, he's a bit rough around the edges, but he's all fluff on the inside. Glad this made you smile! :D

Oh I *do* love recipe fics! And even though you could only post the link, this is definitely a recipe fic--and they sound delicious. I love the way Sam gets his way with the Gaffer, and his eagerness and apprehension when he is doing his lessons with Bilbo. And I also love Frodo's determination to finish what he started on his own. So often someone who's just learning will take on a project that's just a wee bit ambitious for them, and it seems that's what Frodo had done. But Sam to the rescue. And, by the way, I adore your Gaffer. Author Reply: I'm not one for cooking, but seeing as the hobbits love to cook so much, I've at least committed myself to hunting down some good recipes to center stories around. :) Those truffles do sound good, don't they? Sam always gets his way in my fics, lol. I just don't seem able to allow him to be disappointed. I think Sam would have been an eager but nervous student for Bilbo. Eager because he wants to learn things, nervous because he doesn't see himself as being as smart as Bilbo or Frodo. Frodo - exactly. He took on more than he could chew (sorry for the pun, lol). As Sam said, he would have done fine if they hadn't run out of sugar. Frodo is determined to prove himself to Bilbo and show that he's old enough to be responsible for himself now. Bilbo of course, would be starting to fret at this point. Unbeknownst to Frodo, he is starting to itch for the open road again and he would naturally worry about Frodo being left on his own. Frodo will have picked up on that, even if he didn't understand what was causing his cousin to worry. And of course, Sam to the rescue. He was looking after Frodo long before the Quest. :) Sam's Gaffer is, essentially, my own gaffer: grumpy and crotchedy, but with a big fluffy heart and a fierce determination to protect his kids and give them as much as he thinks they need, if not everything they want.
