In Memoriam  by Pearl Took 11 Review(s)
BudgieloverReviewed Chapter: 2 on 9/27/2005
This story reminded me of so many things - listening to the people who read the names of the dead on 9/11, wandering through an old cemetery in a little town on the East Coast, being astonished at the methods of entombment in New Orleans. Like so many of your stories, you mingle sorrow and sweetness here, pain and comfort. And always, a little bit of wisdom that the reader is allowed to keep.

Author Reply: Thank you for such a wistful response. I'm glad it touched you. Thank you :) :)

"A list they shan’t be crossed off of." Pippin softly said.

"Yes. A list that will be looked upon and they will be remembered." Anardil turned to the small knight. "Thank you, m’lord. It greatly settles my heart."

Beautiful, Pearl. What a moving and comforting story.

Author Reply: Thank you :) That is what I had hoped for. Thank you so much.

You have twice brought tears to my eyes in this story, once in sorrow and again in comfort. Very beautifully written.

It was nice to see Cullassisul once more as well.

VWD, my dear.

Author Reply: Thank you, so glad the story is able to bring comfort. Cullassisul came into the story, as she does with her hobbit children, of her own accord :)

That was...I'm trying to find the right word, and I can't just now. Which is sort of sad for a writer, but there you are. It was definitely beautifully written, with such attention to character and descriptive language. I love Pippin's maturity (so many forget he was older than some of the soldiers) and his care of his new friend. And for the wish to be sure that others Remember, to bear witness for the lost or fallen. That is one wish I understand deeply and too many people forget or don't understand. The details of Legolas' curiosity of human/hobbit beliefs and Gimli's connection to the stone - these were lovely as well.

Author Reply: Thank you :) I often find myself at a loss for the right word, I know the feeling. Thank you for mentioning Pippin's maturity, I try to have him be suitably mature. Thank you for reading and responding.

This is a lovely tribute. I once worked for a photographer and during my time there a woman who knew she was dying came in to have photos made for her family while she was still well enough to do so. I remember how odd it all seemed and how hard the photographer tried to make this seem like any other session while all of us, including the woman being photographed, knew that this was one of those last things that you do for your famiy. She was a lovely person and I am sure that her family treasure the photos, but it was so very sad.

Author Reply: Thank you for sharing that, GW :) I'm sure they did treasure them :)

This story is very haunting and Pippin's worries over the dead are quite touching. I like the idea of the names carved in stone in Minas Tirith. I was also glad to see Cullassisul make an appearance again. I do believe that she has managed to ease Pippin's mind a bit.

Author Reply: Thank you :) Yes, she and the Valar did much to ease his mind . . . and mine ;)

Wonderfully done, Pearl! I have often thought about such as Pippin has in this tale...and it is true, that time goes on. A sad fact, but true. But in the end, like you have shown us, Iluvitar remembers all; not one sparrow falls to the ground without his knowledge--so neither the dead ever be forgotten. Thank you for a most heartfelt story. :-)
