| Acacea! That was lovely. You gave life and emotion to Denethor, which is not always easy. I loved way you developed the story going from the present back into the remembrance of the past, tracing Denethor's decent into the forgetfulness of an all-too-busy husband. The little flare of concern when he said "'I would see you happy as you were when we first met in Dol Amroth,'he had said once, and then not known why he had said so, for surely she was happy, was she not?" He knew something was wrong, but again did nothing. Wonderfully done. I also loved how Findulas' mantle slowly brought back memory and sort of became the catalyst in determining that he would not let his son die with trying to do something bridge the gap that had grown. Lovely. I written a story in a similar vein dealing with Findulas' mantel, Denethor and a much younger Faramir called "A Bond Remembered." I just happened upon this story as I was casting about for new stuff to reading and I'm really glad I did! Thanks for writing it! Mirkwoodmaiden Author Reply: Hi:) Thank you for such kind words! I'm delighted you liked it:) Denethor is an interesting charcater and yes, not very easy to write but this one had been lying with me for a while now thought it refused to take proper shape until now. //He knew something was wrong, but again did nothing. | Wow. This is beautiful. I love the phrasing and tone of the narrative -- how dry, how logical, how coldly Denethor courted his wife. There is a detached reasonableness through the whole piece that perfectly shows Denethor's character without any words needing to be said directly describing him. And yet there is a human vulnerability that creeps in as well, when he weeps while holding his dead wife's cloak. The ending sets this whole vignette in context of the War and the Pyre, and suddenly it takes on an entirely new and deeper meaning. Beautifully done. | Oh, a sigh of deep satisfaction and concern. So, this is how the mantle came to be at hand for Faramir to give to Eowyn. How beautiful the images, the withdrawal due to cares of state, the desire to rebuild.... Lovely. Lovely. Always listen to Ann--her instincts are wonderful. | I like the description of Denethor's standoffish yet loving courtship. And I like the implication that he grew to love Finduilas more than he realized. The whole story seems very him. Author Reply: Thank you!:) I'm glad to hear that the courtship and the subsequent relationship comes of well... I could not imagine him going through it any other way. | |
