Pearl's Pearls  by Pearl Took 4 Review(s)

Gaffer's pride in his son was very touching. I love the Gaffer and you've caught him to perfection - that mixture of stubborn independence and vulnerability, not letting on how much he can hear , staying quiet and observing. Bless the old hobbit!

Author Reply: Bless him indeed!

I'm so pleased that you like how I write the Gaffer :) Thank you so very much!

So right that the Gaffer should feel proud and joyful at this new turn of events. So very right. His Sam, the hero of the age, just like out of one of them storybooks.

Yes, I can certainly see this. And Old Hamfast hiding the fact he hears more than they realize. Wily old bird.

Author Reply: Thank you :) Yes, I think the Gaffer would be like a good friend of mine - liking to seem tough and crotchety but a good soul within. He would have great fun pulling such a thing.

But pride quickly warmed him. His son was leading hobbits of Bywater to gain back Bag End. To gain back Mr. Frodo’s home. And his home. And the Shire.

Pride in our children is a wonderful thing and to earn the pride of our parents is a prize above all telling.

Author Reply: That is so true! Thank you for reading, harrowcat, and I'm glad you liked it :)

“First ya be needin’ watched o’re nigh all the time and takin’ lots o’ naps.” his voice said in his
thoughts. “Then ya be the one doing the watchin’ and never nappin’. Then yer back to bein’ the one they be keeping an eye on whilst yer nappin’.”

I just love that line! I love your Gaffer, too. Another excellent story!
