Bridges of Stone  by docmon 10 Review(s)

This is a lovely tale. Poor Gimli is so worried at his friend's silence, wondering if he made a mistake bringing him to the cave, even doubting that their friendship is possible. I was as delighted as Gimli at the elf's pure joy in discovering the beauty in the stones.

Given that Legolas is so often described in fanfic as claustrophobic, I think it was a neat touch for him to ask about staying longer, and I loved your image his eyes reflecting the light of the gems in the cave. Very nice! ~TF

Author Reply: Thank you, TithenFeredir! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Yes, Gimli can work himself up at times, and the moment of Legolas's joy was a check on his doubt.
It seems to have become common to portray Legolas as claustrophobic, and I wanted to break from that a little. The image of his eyes reflecting the gems' light just came to me. glad it worked for you!
Thanks for taking the time to write! docmon

And Legolas's wonder helps Gimli to see a whole new layer of beauty. He is so anxious for his friend to see what he sees - and yet he is filled with that defensiveness that expects the elf to mock, but he still opens something that matters to him. Gimli is seriously sweet here.

Author Reply: thank you, bodkin! I thought it was a neat twist that Gimli expected to show Legolas something new, and found something new himself - or rather, re-found something he'd just forgotten for a bit.

Great little story. You did a good job of describing what I think Gimli would have felt about Legolas. Also the fact that even though he will never truly understand him, Gimli recognizes what a rare gift his friendship with the elf is and how it could go beyond just the two of them. The last line sums it up perfectly.

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I think their friendship is a special one with many implications for everyone.

Hi Docmon! I really enjoyed this story -- it is a new and interesting angle on how Legolas and Gimli see their friendship, and how the caves could become a way for Elves and Dwarves to learn from each other. Very nicely done!

Author Reply: Oh, thank you, Barbara! I'm glad you like how I portrayed their friendship. I think it's reasonable to think they had their bumps along the way, but the foundation of the friendship would always carry them through. Thanks for writing!

What beautiful descriptions, both of the friendship and of the place! Tolkien's words are certainly good inspiration...I loved the image of Legolas singing and the walls reverberating with sound. My reading group just read that part out loud at school on Thursday, and it sparked a lot of recollections of caves and admiration for the words. You continued that thought nicely.

Author Reply: thanks, songspinner! I'm glad the descriptions of the cave rang true for you - since I've never been to a real cave. Well, maybe little ones in a state park - that would count, right? I would love to see a cave such as Aglarond. With an elf singing in it, of course. ;-)
Thanks for taking the time to write.

Stone bridges of friendship - strong, sturdy and lasting. Lovely work Docmon.

Author Reply: thank you! yes, that was my main point here, glad it came across well. I'm glad too that the title worked so well for you - it was the hardest part of writing this!

This is very sweet, and very moving. The description of Legolas' eyes shining in the reflected jewel light is especially beautiful. And the Elf's song in the Dwarven cathedral is particularly appropriate, somehow. Nicely done.

Author Reply: Oh, thank you, Lamiel! The shining eyes was one thing that just came to me in this one (actually, the whole story just kind of plopped itself in my lap one night). I'm glad that you liked it so much. Thanks for taking the time to write.

A nice little tale - I particularly liked the way you illustrated the difficulties of this friendship - it could not have been all plain sailing even after the quest.
Nice image of the elf singing in the cave - it would have sounded wonderful all echoing around the cave.
Rose

Author Reply: Thank you, Rose! I do think the friendship would have its bumps like all friendships, especially given their numerous differences. I thought the singing would have sounded wonderful too - I wish I could have a tape of that!

What a wonderful tale of caving and the beauties that are hidden below the earth. I have been through the caves in Kentucky, and it is amazing to see the rock formations and the bending of the paths and walkways that have been formed over eons of time. When Legolas started singing, it made me think of the immortal existence of the rock with the long-lived lives of the elves.
I liked your friendship between Gimli and Legolas. Two such radically different cultures finding a shared enjoyment even though they are not even on the same page of understanding half the time. And yet they both see the same beauty and come to the same conclusion - that elf and dwarf could come here and see the beauty of the cave and know that a friendship could be built between the two cultures.

Author Reply: Thank you SO much, rikki, for the wonderful review! I'm so glad that the little story resonated with you, especially since you have been to a cave like that. I have not, unfortunately, and only had the stories and what little I knew to go on. But the story was mainly about the friendship, and I'm glad you saw that, and that my ideas came through just as I'd meant them. I was struck by your connection of the immortal rock with the immortal elves - I honestly hadn't made that connection. Not in that way, anyway. Thanks for the insight.
thanks so much for taking the time to write!

A lovely tale. I liked to see Legolas's wonder through Gimli's eyes - that was a nice touch. I particularly liked this line: the contradictions of youth and innocence in the ageless elf - that, for me, sums up the mystery of elves. Well done!
