The Short Cut  by Garnet Took 7 Review(s)
Grey WondererReviewed Chapter: 1 on 11/15/2005
(“oh, you’ll see, Pippin. I never get lost.”) famous last words! I had to laugh at this. I love the way Pippin waits until he can't stand it any longer to let Merry know that he knows that Merry is lost. It's even funnier when Pippin leads them out again. Great story!

Author Reply: Oh, thank you. I'm never sure that an idea is a good one when it comes to me as clearly and completely as this one did. It seemed almost too easy to write.:)

Thanks for taking the time to read and review.

Was so glad to have a few leisure moments to get to this story on my "want to read list".

"I only came along so you wouldn’t have to find your way back all by yourself. Lead on, Dear Cousin; though maybe I should say lead back, if you still can.”
(Aha. Cheeky, our Pip, but I wonder if he's to be proved right?)

“oh, you’ll see, Pippin. I never get lost.”
(Famous last words?)

(Mmm, apple tart. Fighting the sudden urge to go and whip one up and slip it into the oven right now. Such a trial, reading hobbit stories when hungry!)

There were things even a foolhardy soul like himself didn’t do, and one of those was telling Merry Brandybuck he was wrong.
(LOL!)

Well,” answered Pippin, “then it’s a good thing I was paying attention to which turnings and twistings we made. Believe it, or not, I think I can get us out of this. If I do, I promise never to mention it to anyone, but I reserve the right to remind you of it should you decide that you are the sole authority on finding the way in unfamiliar areas. You have to admit, Merry, that while you're the better map reader, I'm the one with the better memory. Come on. Let's have some luncheon, and then head home. We'll go fishing another day. And, if anyone asks, we just went for a tramp in the woods."
(I just love this little speech of Pippin's! It shows such promise for the future, as well as paints a very good picture of the lad at present.)

(And I love the ending!)

Author Reply: Thank you so much for all the kind word. I am glad you liked it. I'm glad that Pippin's character rings true. I wanted to capture his cheek, but also his love for Merry. They're competitive, but in a loving sort of way.

Thanks again for reading and for the encouragement.

ROTFL!!! You beat me to it, you goose! LOL, not that I was working on it at the moment... Fantastic, Garnet! I loved this line:

"Pippin was not about to say anything to tell Merry that he thought they were lost. There were things even a foolhardy soul like himself didn’t do, and one of those was telling Merry Brandybuck he was wrong. …And they think we Tooks are the crazy ones. But he kept this thought to himself and tried to pay more attention to their surroundings.

Oh, that was too precious! Your Pippin let Merry off the hook--mine won't! Hehehe I got a nice tickle out of this tale--thank you for sharing!

Author Reply: Glad you liked it. I have no idea where it came from. It was just in my mind when I got up this morning, so I decided to write it down before it got away from me again.

I figured Pippin would go easy on Merry because he doesn't want to make his older cousin too mad at him. He also hopes that Merry learned a lesson. I dought if he did.

Now I'm really looking forward to you take on this one.

Thanks for the plotbunny.:)

Very cute. No wonder Pippin was so wise when Frodo proposed cutting off cross country on the way to Buckland. Already experienced at Brandybuck sense of direction, I think.

Author Reply: Yeah. Once bitten, twice shy.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

That's all right," was Pippin's sleepy reply. "I probably should have been kinder to you. After all, you are a Brandybuck, and everyone knows that they have to work twice as hard to be as good as us Tooks at anything." Pippin giggled as Merry's pillow landed solidly on his stomach.

Adorable! Pippin Took is certainly no fool. What a lovely, cousin-y story.

Author Reply: No, he certainly isn't. Thanks for reading and commenting on this one.

Oh that is *so* cute! And now we know *exactly* where Pippin got his first-hand knowledge of that old saying. But of course, Bagginses are probably just as bad as Brandybucks when admitting they are wrong...

Author Reply: I figured he had to have had a bad experience with a short cut before, or he would not have been so adamant about not taking the one from Woodhall.

Bagginses and Brandybucks seem to have a lot of traits in common, and not all of them good. Poor Frodo got it from both sides it would seem. All three of those cousins had some real character traits they had to overcome to one degree or other. Frodo was stubborn to a fault, Merry could be quite prideful on ocasion and poor Pippin was so incurably impulsive. Sometimes it is amazing they turned out to be such exellent people.

Thanks for the review.
