Water and Wine  by jenolas 12 Review(s)

An elf-lover told me to read this. She loved it, but I note she did not comment! Shame on her - I'll go yell after I'm done with this.

I love Boromir and so was particularly smitten by this tale. The friendship between A&B was delightful. They should have stayed in Lothlorien for much longer. Perhaps - oh well, Boromir had to do what he did to help Frodo do what he had to do, so that Middle-earth could be saved! But it's very hard reading.

Thank you for this joy-filled time with the Fellowship!

Really enjoyed this story. Nice to see Aragorn and Boramir playing together, plus they almost won. I like it that Boramir got some wine anyway.

Heya! *smiles* This was so good. I love Aragorn, and I love fics that show a good Boromir, so this was perfect. Wondertastic job! =D

This is a nice treat! I love your Aragorn/Boromir friendship stories. Poor Boromir. It seems the delicious wine is a little potent :-) Everyone should have a friend who carries around miracle hangover cures in their pocket!

So he challenged them to a race?? LOL! At least the stakes weren’t too high, I suppose. Not that either man wants to look like an idiot in front of the Galadhrim. It makes sense for them to have some time to practise with the boats before leaving Lothlorien. I bet they gave the elves a few laughs, though! And hobbits, come to think of it. This line is hilarious: “I said they could not sink, I did not say they could not capsize.” I just love the fact that this brought the two men closer and allowed them to be completely relaxed to the point where they can even tease each other. What a pity they never really got to develop this friendship – you make it seem like it could have been a lasting one.

I can’t believe Galadriel and Celeborn turned up! I think I’d have run away at that point. Gimli’s comment has me grinning away here – only he could be practical and romantic at the same time! I was so glad Aragorn and Boromir did well – good point about their Númenorean strength – and I had to laugh when they surprised Legolas and Haldir and then sailed by them. I love too that that moment brought the whole Fellowship together. (Except Legolas!)

And what a lovely ending. He deserved that. I wonder whatever happened to that wine?

I really enjoyed this. I hope all is well – it’s good to have you around again :-)

Author Reply: Hi Dot, thanks for the welcome back!

I am pleased you enjoyed this little story. Although Legolas was on the 'other side' (as well he should be in this instance, in my opinion)perhaps it was he who convinced Haldir they should be gracious in vicotry.

Unfortunately for Faramir, I imagine the wineskin was left behind by the three hunters at Amon Hen with the other unnecessary items.

I'll bet that was one of those mornings when Boromir wished he could put his head down and dismiss his vague recollections of the night before.

A boat race! The training sessions must have caused considerable entertainment - their memory will remain green in Lothlorien and among its elves for centuries after they have departed. Well worth a couple of skins of elvish wine.

And I really liked seeing Aragorn and Boromir become closer - they're both a bit tight-mouthed and cautious and could do with a bit of fun to draw them together.

I wish I could have seen the race!

Author Reply: Perhaps Boromir will take more heed of Aragorn in future, especially where Elves are concerned! It definitely would have been a fun time watching the race not to mentione the less than perfect practice session!

Wonderful story; I only wish it had lasted longer! It can be challenging to find friendship stories for Aragorn and Boromir, so I hope you write many, many more!

Author Reply: Thanks.

(In case you are unaware, I have written a two other (longer)Aragorn and Boromir friendship stories, namely "Lords and Rangers" and "The Last Word" which can both be found in this archive).

Loved it, all of it, every single word. Especially hung-over Boromir, oh and the race, and the end.

Author Reply: Your enthusiasm for this little bit of fun is very much appreciated.

I like poor, hung-over Boromir at the beginning of this tale, and Aragorn's miraculous remedy. I could use some of that!

The descriptions of the men practising were fun: 'the first time the boat capsized' suggested immediately that there would be many other occasions. The race itself was good, but it would have been rather far-fetched for the men to win against elves - though I did like Legolas & Haldir's momentary surprise that nearly lost them the race.

Author Reply: The moment of surprise was indeed the only victory the Men could really hope for against their opponents! Thanks for taking the time to read and review, Jay.

I love gap fillers, and this is a good example of why. I like your characterizations. Too bad the budding friendship between Aragorn and Boromir never had a chance to really develop. Nice little touch at the end, too. Gotta love those thoughtful elves.

Author Reply: I like gap fillers,(for which there is so much scope!) too. Thank you so much for your comments.

What a delightful story !I do hope that somehow the wine will reach Faramir.

Author Reply: I imagine Faramir would agree with you( if he knew!).
